We can't assume that he endorsed either Mein Kampf or the Communist Manifesto. He probably favorited them because he thought they were important, not because he agreed with them.
For example, quite a few crusading atheists have a "favorite" Gospel. They don't like the Gospels, they don't agree with the Gospels, but they spend hours every day reading the Gospels and arguing that they can't possibly be true.
So it's more likely that he saw himself as criticizing the books, rather than endorsing them.
