Odds are I won't be able to afford anything, and if I can, I am a lousy enough judge of people in general that I will never know what to get them.
I make up for it by not telling people my own birthday unless specifically asked so they don't have to worry about it either.

If you're really bothered about this, then get him something in the future to make up for it (when you have some extra money to spend).
