I had the misfortune (entirely my own fault) of studying philosophy at university. But I try to pay attention to other academic disciplines and there's a lot of crossover between philosophy and the other "soft sciences".
Philosophy is only useful when it has real-world applications imo

For a banker used to living the good life, being in jail for just a few years is going to be pure hell, and his quality of life after getting out will be drastically reduced because of the great loss in social status and difficulty in getting a decent job as an ex-con. His life is ruined.
For the homeless man, being in jail might actually be pretty nice, and nothing will have changed after he gets out.
