So the guy who did Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt got a chance to tell the world how he really feels.
He did a show called Hen Zemi and the fansub is out.
This show has redeeming qualities. If I ever need an example of why free speech protections are needed, I would point to this show.
This show has at least two important lessons.
Lesson 1: The Japanese psyche is dominated by a need to prove its impassivity. Have you seen those Japanese game shows where the contestants volunteer to suffer degradation and pain (e.g. straight male contestants getting spanked and getting their butts licked) all the while attempting to keep their faces absolutely expressionless?
They are demonstrating their ability to keep an expressionless face. This skill is greatly valued in Japan. This is why the Japanese subsidize disgusting art. They need to train themselves to feel shock without showing it.
Lesson 2: The word for "Love" (koi) is very similar to the word for "perversion" (hen). I.e., all love is an irrational willingness to sacrifice rational self-interest.
The writer *knows* he is demonstrating Lesson 2. I don't know if the writer is self-aware enough to realize that he's demonstrating Lesson 1.
However, this show is disgusting. I hate it as art, but it's useful as data for sociology. That is why it is a perfect example of why free speech needs protection. The society that protects disgusting speech will be able to learn more than the society that does not.
