  1. I was shocked to find out there was only 19 Japanese Marines ever. I mean, after 200+ years of existence and the large Japanese influence in the Army, (GEN Eric Shinseki, Former Army Chief of Staff, Ranger, West Point graduate, and general badass)that there was only 19, ever.

    Sauce here:[url=http://www.discovernikkei.org/en/resources/military/search/?keywords=&name=&gender=&birth_year=&birth_place=&induction_year=&enlistment_type=&service_branch=usmc&service_type=&unit_type=&units_served=&countries=&separation_year=]

Some of these people are literally Aryan though.

I guess, with my impending enlistment and all, a good nickname would be "20." What do you guys think?

In a survey of U.S. troops in combat in Iraq, fewer than half of Marines and a little more than half of Army soldiers said they would report a member of their unit for killing or wounding an innocent civilian.

More than 40 percent support the idea of torture in some cases, and 10 percent reported personally abusing Iraqi civilians, the Pentagon said Friday in what it called its first ethics study of troops at the war front. Units exposed to the most combat were chosen for the study, officials said.

    Findings included:

    * Sixty-two percent of soldiers and 66 percent of Marines said that they knew someone seriously injured or killed, or that a member of their team had become a casualty.
    * The 2006 adjusted rate of suicides per 100,000 soldiers was 17.3 soldiers, lower than the 19.9 rate reported in 2005.
    * Only 47 percent of the soldiers and 38 percent of Marines said noncombatants should be treated with dignity and respect.
    * About a third of troops said they had insulted or cursed at civilians in their presence.
    * About 10 percent of soldiers and Marines reported mistreating civilians or damaging property when it was not necessary. Mistreatment includes hitting or kicking a civilian.
    * Forty-four percent of Marines and 41 percent of soldiers said torture should be allowed to save the life of a soldier or Marine.
    * Thirty-nine percent of Marines and 36 percent of soldiers said torture should be allowed to gather important information from insurgents.

Looks like we have some pretty anti-war people here. Can't argue with statistics though.

No problem, bro. I was always too American for my family anyways. My dad took back what he said a while after but still is upset with my decision. That's pretty far in the past and I like to think I'm tough so no hard feelings.

But I'm enlisting no matter what. I've been committed to joining the military for about 8 years. If it makes you feel any better I'm trying to get a stint training JGSDF guys at Camp Fuji.

  15. Honestly, you guys disappoint me. Someone is willing to give their life, and go against their own families opinion for a decision they believe in. Regardless of how you feel about service and war in general, you guys should respect his resolve.

Personally, sounds like a good nickname, though from what I know, you earn nicknames not decide them yourself. Good luck with your training and good job having the courage to make the decision yourself and not letting yourself be influenced by others.

Personally, I think what you are doing is admirable.

Thanks buddy. It means a lot.

But yeah, I can vouch for the fact that nicknames are earned, not chosen. In high school, when I was in JROTC I got the nickname "Radiation Dick" because I make a joke once about dropping the bombs. They thought it was funny. Apparently too funny.
