An honor rule student and cheerleader is facing expulsion because she told the school she had her hunting rife in the trunk of her car during a search.
The mindless response by the school officials makes me wish I could have 10 to 15 minutes alone with them, some rubber hose ,some jumper cables, and a variac.

Back in the old days not so much, but in this nanny society it is.

I don't see why she confessed to having the rifle in the back of her car? (O_o ) Isn't that the weirdest thing to do, ever? There was absolutley no reason to tell that to anybody. She should have just finished school that day, driven back home and put the gun in its place.
That said, I don't approve of the school's unreasonable zero-tolerance policy here. Although I can sort of understand that it could give the school trouble if they don't expel her, especially since this would create an unequal treatment-situation towards other students who have firearms with them at school.

You make it sound like having a gun around near a school has never and can't easily lead to casualties.

Yah it's gotten ridiculous.
The only fix I say is to turn back the rules to the way they were 10 maybe even 20 years ago and go back to requiring school officials to actual be be capable of rational thought to hold their positions.
This is why I call ZT Zero inTelligence policies as only someone with zero intelligence would need them.We did just fine for 180 thousand years without ZT rules and nanny policies so we don't need them now.

I know people who used to bring hunting rifles to school when they were going to be hunting right afterward. Mind you they are in their 50s.

Of course. I have no doubt that this girl is completely innocent. But Peter's comment carried the implication that only a nanny state would forbid firearms near schools.

An honor student wouldn't tell anybody about her gun if she wanted to kill people.

because she's an honor student or because shes not stupid?
pretty sure theres a group of people who brag about their guns and kill people. Also sure there are seemingly normal student who have also killed people and who may or may not have been known to have guns.
just saying, as a responsible official i'm pretty sure it would qualify as reasonable suspicion.

Why would you bring a hunting rifle to school? Convenience? That's just plain stupid.
She brought a gun to school; it's perfectly reasonable for her to be expelled. It wasn't because she was honest - if she wasn't honest, then they would still find it when they searched anyway.

Why she announced she had a rifle locked in her car is beyond me.

Judging from what she did during Thanksgiving break, it seems she didn't mean to bring it with her. Also, "then they would still find it when the searched anyway." If she said nothing why would anyone search her car at all?

For those who didn't read the RTFA and are thinking "there's no reason to bring a rifle to school," she just forgot the thing in her trunk. People forget things. And since it was secured and unloaded, as is required by most states (I believe), the weapon realistically posed little threat. Should she face some sort of punishment? Probably. Should she be expelled? No. Should this have made the news or even been kept as any sort of record which'll screw her over when she tries to get into college? Absolutely not. Declaring that she'd accidentally brought it with her is like saying "I accidentally brought this fruit with me" when you go through customs. Lose the fruit, but hopefully save yourself from grief from a chance that it'll be found by some customs official. These zero-tolerance policies just allow people to hand over responsible decision making to some dipshit trying to win over votes, or make it look like they are "doing something" to combat a "sudden and terrible problem sweeping across the nation."
When I was a high-school student and these zero-tolerance policies were being put into place I carried a utility knife with me every day, used it in front of my instructors and the administrators, and never even received a raised eyebrow because my school didn't have a zero-tolerance policy and everyone was expected to think for themselves. I didn't leave a trail of bodies in my wake. Weapons don't kill people, people kill people.

She's an idiot. Nuff' said.

Well now she can use that hunting rifle to good use and kill whoever supported her expulsion.

QFT
and many honors roll students are goody-two-shoes kind of people. This is probably what happened - she panicked when she remembered, so she just wanted to tell a person in a position of authority to save her further distress if they find out. Unfortunately, that person over-reacted and shit hit the fan
its amazing how the US is full of such bullshit and yet still is the 'freedom' nation of the world - or not

If she didn't bring the gun inside the school and was unloaded and locked in her trunk conveys the doubt of her conspiring to kill people. And the fact that she was an honor rule student and cheerleader says much more than say, the Columbine boys or Cho Sung Hui as a mental case for killing others.
