  1. Okay as it says what do you think they exist for or rather i should say what should their responsibilities be.

To me a governments job is to protect its people from outside invaders a loss of freedoms liberties and rights as well as keep corporations from gaining control all the while staying out of individuals lives as much as possible(things like healthcare and taxes excluded).

In short keep corporations on a short leash and let the people be whatever they want to be while ensuring basic rights liberties and freedoms.

  4. Governments are made of self-righteous money-greedy people who claim an important position so they can make claims that they're more important than others.

  5. First, what form of government do you want? (That's for everybody):

  6. If it weren't for government, you'd be living in mogadish-on-you, right now.
Governments are there to keep anarchy and chaos a little managable.
Also, if you're lucky enough to land a cushy job in a department that its a total waste of tax payers funds, with little or no chance of it being phased out.
Then you're pretty much set, especially if you stay long enough to get a pension after retirement, along with benefits - all at the tax payers expense.

A nutter ting, if we didn't have governments then that would be 60 percent less news on the tele. Someone is always screwing around and someones is always getting caught or ratting out someone.
When governemnts clash, that is an extra 10% of bad news for GTO to work with,....

    "ensuring basic rights"

You don't need any further answer.

Of course, it's a platonic view of the world and the only practical usage of said ideals are the "thing" we have today. It can turn to better or worse depending on the generation in charge but we will never live up to the ideal, and that is a good thing mind you, utopia is a whole different issue we really don't want to deal with.[code]

  9. I'm fond of

Of the people, by the people, for the people.

Recently it seems to be 'of the rich lawyers, by the rich lawyers, for the rich lawyers'.

Ever notice how few politicians have never been to law school?
I guess it helps to know law when you want to lie and swindle, and be able to hide it behind legislation eh.

People might scoff, but I look at all my downloading like this, I'm just doing what my government does every day, I am merely not capable of their magnitude.

I sleep ok at night knowing I am not better and no worse than my government.

Yes I am glad their is 'structure' in Canada, a form of how it's done, that seems more or less functional. Because as was pointed out, some parts of the world are a lot worse than here.
Nothing stopping me from going to law school, and then joining the government and screwing the people like the rest of them.

    This,
    but in a general sense
    - protect my rights as a citizen while provide internal stability and prevent corruption the best it can.

    You forgot taking your money.
But yeah, society sadly doesn't work without laws.
Somebody needs to be in control, or else it would be hell.

  16. IMO and this is the great political debate.
Ideally government protects the masses from force and fraud that they may pursue their own liberty unless that pursuit inflicts force or fraud on others.
What counts as fraud or violence and what causes them is another debate.
