Makoto Shinkai 2011's Film

  1. That guy is a genius and I really like ALL his works

His new film, Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below, is slated to be released in 2011. It looks to me like a girl 'exploring' the history of the land she is in and experiencing all the loss/grief/joy/emotions that has taken place in that location.

    Take a look yourself ;)

I still want to see 5 Centimeters per Second. I've heard so many good things about it. I'm madly looking forward to this too, now.

Uhh.. I dunno. Unless you're a Makoto Shinkai fan?
I've seen it and to be honest the only thing I liked about it is the visuals. I'm not trying to be a jerk but the story could have been better. Kind of a bit too emo & close-minded for my liking...

So I just finished watching 5cm/s. And I couldn't believe what I was seeing. That art wasn't like anything I'd ever seen before. My jaw dropped especially hard (about 5 meters per second) during the ending song, where tens of shots that looked like they would have taken 40 hours each to complete were shown for less than a second each. Were they loaded with excess production budget or something?

@Travodka: I guess first person narration is one of those things you either like or don't. I thought it was expertly done.

    It is a great movie.

***FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED, SPOILER!!!!! ***

It was well done in all technicality I admit, the 1st person narration included. The one that put me off was the consequences of the story itself. I mean, they did meet for the last in part 1 after all, they could have exchanged addresses or phone numbers, but they didn't, even though they both admit their love for each other. And when they did that reality ensues as they never get to be together again, as expected.

Though, as much as I went wtf I do know it's all intended. Perhaps to depict the indecisive human nature that would risk even a partner's loyalty & left when away for a long time & in doubt or something else. Well, it seems his films aren't intended for everyone.

    ***SPOILER ENDS***

I also watched The Place Promised In Our Early Days and get the same kind of disappointment. So I'll just be walking away from seeing his productions I think.. Still, I'm curious. Other than the visuals, sounds & technical aspects(both in production & storytelling), which part of it you guys find brilliant, and why? Also, did you guys honestly liked the story?

I get *really* really depressed after watching his films. But I enjoyed it in a bitter-sweet way.

I joked with my friend before that his films were mainly about unhappy chilldhood romance and trains, and it shows! I dunno about you but he shows in his films a very accurate, non-anime fantasy way of how many people approach the world and in particular, relationships. His other main theme is how relationships evolve or even intersect through the passage of time.

I can 'feel' how in Part 1 of 5cm/s, like what you describe, people neglect to do stuff which they will regret immensely in hindsight, just because of shyness/awkwardness and other misc human reasons. Similarly, in Place Promised in our Early Days, if you have had a childhood friend whom you drifted away due to time, you would understand deeply how much a childhood promise made can mean to you, and the decisions you have to make in the future in light of what you have promised.

This is getting overly long but I really like all his films so I can't help but to try my best to explain them. Nonetheless, I feel his films reach out to a wide variety of audience so what works for me or the way I interpret it might be different from say, yourself. This is what makes the films so beautiful IMHO, as it allows for a myriad of perspectives through the same scenes.

They exchanged addresses. That was how they exchanged letters in the first place to set up the meeting. Then during the ending sequence you see them checking the mailbox for a letter from each other.

However, once you haven't really talked to someone in a long time (this is before facebook, email, etc. mind you), you don't really know what to say and go "I'll write a letter later". Eventually you just never get around to it and the communication stops, hence a relationship drifting apart 5 centimeters per second.

That's what I love about his stuff. Anyone who has ever had that happened to them can see the realistic portrayal of the distance between two people. He captures the depressed feeling people get when they can't communicate with someone they care about, whether it be because of messages not getting through or having no idea what to say and just never getting back in contact.

  14. ^ you are making me depressed all over again when I think of the themes of
    the movies.

    damn.... TT_TT

great films and a great director. I never forgot the first time I watched Voice of A Distant Star. Btw, there was an ending in the manga which followed the film which wrapped up the end nicely

I own the manga. I liked how it explored the story more and brought in new characters.

  17. I suspect it has such a strong effect on me is because of the focus on childhood friends and lost promises with forgotten friendships.

Personally, I have lost contact with almost ALL my childhood friends. Its very sad whenever I think about it, but distance, schools and other whatnots seemed to have split us up. I can't find them on facebook either. My 'earliest' really good buddy is now studying halfway across the world and I have no idea when is he even coming back.

    Stuffs I forgot & reasonings

Oops, checked back & yeah they actually did. I forgot, sorry. But yeah point is I understand this kind of relationship that eventually disperses. Just getting a conformation there, and the way it seems the appreciation of this situation applies mostly to GOOD friends. Which I didn't have in my early days, what's with most being bullies & back stabbers I want to forget & disappear from my life for good. Eventually as I encounter the few I can trust I made sure I don't lost contact of them even as we go separate ways, realizing the fact that trustworthy friends like that don't come around every so often.

Seeing all this from my point of view, I suppose it's only natural that I didn't like it because the couple seemed like people who don't know how to keep a good friend in contact for their own sake when they're both people who don't have much friends to begin with to me. But I see how people with different experiences & opinion can react differently to Makoto Shinkai's movies and it's not only me not liking it. So maybe I'm just one of those people who gets rubbed off by his stuffs due to my different views on things.

  19. His shows predominantly shows how life often put you down and sets you on divergent paths despite your attempts to right the wrong so as to speak. One action can lead to serious consequences and a totally different path in your life, be it good or bad.

He is one of the directors whose movies can consistently make me emo days on end after watching, and yet I go back for more due to the honesty they depict

  20. Agreed on things you said thaer.. Especially the emo-maker part. xP Which I'm not really into. Let's just say I'm interested in a different form of depiction of honesty. Life is sad enough I bear not to see more.

Maybe I'm just experiencing too much of what he tries to convey in his films it just puts me off. I won't deny that that technically it and his movies in general are awesome though.
