Makoto shinkai is one of those names you should just know, like Miyazaki, Shinichiro Watanabe, Akira Toriyama, and Satoshi Kon.
Granted the only thing I've seen by him is She and her Cat.

See watanabe i know myazaki duh akira who the hell doesn't satoshi kon i know i've heard the name but cant match it and isn't watanbe the guy behind crazy ass shit who likes to insert himself as nabeshin? Now names i DO know that you didn't mention is Jun fukuyama and well the article women(i dare not mention their names). Son and and so forth but yeah.
