Looks like Spacex is going to have some competition. It seems the third time was the charm for Orbital Sciences Corp the Antares rocket has lifted off and performed flawlessly on it's maiden flight. <a href="http://www.space.com/20712-private-antares-rocket-launch-success.html" rel="nofollow">http://www.space.com/20712-private-antares-rocket-launch-success.html</a> An interesting fact the Antares uses the same engine intended for the Soviet N1 rocket in a modernized form.

Some good news on the space front today. Virgin Galactic had cold flow test SS2's engine in flight paving the way for powered test. The funny thing the story I posted is two days newer though the private groups plan on going to the Moon without NASA if necessary. Though skipping the Moon in developing a Mars architecture is just stupid. The moon is an easy to reach target to practice on and it's close enough to return home quickly if something goes wrong. It's only three days away with chemical rockets but with a nuclear thermal rocket you can go from LEO to the Moon in 24 hours.
