Square Enix’s announcement of Star Ocean 5, developed by Tri-Ace, is sure to be a bit of a shock to fans – both as the last entry into the franchise was half a decade ago, and because Square Enix’s current condition may not bode well for the new title.
A video released via Star Ocean 5’s official website that chronicles the events of previous games:
While little info about Star Ocean 5 has been divulged, the developers have at least mentioned that the game will more closely resemble Star Ocean 3 than 4 – as well as the fact that it is being developed for PS3 and, amazingly enough for a top mobile developer like Square Enix, PS4.

Fuck off, at least the combat system in 4 was pretty fucking amazing and different.
The combat was the only thing it had going for it unfortunately so I understand why people panned it so badly. Even with the combat system if you pushed through too fast in the game certain areas became massive brick walls in progression because it would let you move up to certain points in the game fairly easily then throw a really really hard battle at you that seemed like a huge difficulty step up. There were tons of flow breakers like that in the game which made for an annoying experience. SO3 was far better polished imo and I hope they bring the good things it had and incorporate the good from SO4 and what they learned from the experience. I think it could only result in a better game if they come at it the right way.
I really liked 3. The characters and world felt good. 4 all the characters felt a bit forced, as did the reasoning. The dreaded 'twist' in 3 was actually pretty brilliant, they just executed it in a more playful way rather than going Xenogears/Evangelion style with it.
Now we just have to hope those MOTHERFUCKING ASSHOLES STOP MAKING THE TROPHIES LIFE-SUCKINGLY FUCKING ANNOYINGLY GO FUCK YOURSELF EAT A DICK POINTLESS!!
Either way, I admit. I did feel like SO didn't get a truly worthy sendoff. Pre-ordering full special edition because I'm grateful they're doing it.

You're right about the difficulty jumps sometimes. Usually when that happens, switching character control to Reimi usually helped a lot as she could attack and just backstep evade everything the rest of the time.
Do that a few battles, and soon enough the enemies aren't that difficult for your level anymore.
All that was in retrospect though...
4 sucked ass
So were many of the Ps2 to PS3 transitioned series: i.e. Final Fantasy Xiii , Star Ocean 4 , Midnight Club 4 - just a few examples.

Star Ocean 2 was the best... They should emulate that.
3 was much worse than 4, though they're both pretty bad. At least in 4 you don't spend over half the game on a medieval planet, in a game that's supposed to be about space.
Star Ocean 2 had the characters on a low tech planet for 80 percent of the game until you went to Energy Nede.

Damn yes! I loved Star Ocean 4.. I never saw 3 or 2 so can't say how they compared but damn SO4 was awesome and better than most game release! I want to see SO5!

Yup, excellent game overall, except you realize everything it's just a videogame you are in and your characters are "actually" very well programed NPC, there on the game just turns into a big pile of shit.
I don't understand why everyone hated that. It was excellent. The whole concept of it being 4D was a beautiful metaphor. Turn reality on its side, and what exactly would it look like, and that's exactly what a soul that lives many lifetimes would see, a world where they repeat lives. If all you were worried about was killing the drama, yes, that happened a bit because of it, but that didn't make it worse. That idea really was excellent, just perhaps not executed the way people may have liked. Didn't make it a bad concept or idea.
SO4 was lame because it was an xbox 360 exclusive

So does anyone else believe that the 4D beings rescued the 3D universe at the end of Star Ocean Till the End of time? There was a post game scene that had them returning to Styx only to find that the time gate was inactive. It's entirely likely the 4D beings cut off the 3D universe and left it alone, or their link to the Eternal Sphere was lost.
no, if shepard selected the blue color scheme, then the game ends well, because 4D beings to the 3D. then space travel. i hear it's amazing when the famous stuffed purple worm in flap jaw space, with the tuning fork, does a raw blink on hara kiri rock... error. i don't know what the hell i'm talking about.

funny sankaku makes a post about this shit series but not one about the most anticipated jrpg of the year, Persona 5. The reveal video on youtube has nearly 3 millions views which makes it be more popular than this shit game and even FFXV.

Blow these unoverused Persona nuts! Cliche Shounen "Nekama saves all!" protagonists dominate this series just like most other JRPGs. At least Persona has proven to be more original and interesting (modern urban setting blows shitty medieval fantasy into the been there/done that garbage can). Persona fucks this series and almost every other JRPG series in their "can't tell the difference between them anymore" asses.
I prefer the end game of SO3 compared to the persona series.
Star Ocean 3 is like Capcoms Devil May Cry 2, it'll never have a story beyond said game because they fucked up badly.

Lol, you mean that moment when it was revealed that all the shit that happened in 90% of the game was in virtual reality and then boom, you're suddenly in real world and facing final boss. Yeah, that was shitty and kill all the mood the story build up quite successfully up till this point. No SO for me after that.
It doesn't kill a sequel at all. *SPOILERS FOLLOW* In fact it can be re-used very effectively. Most people just don't have any imagination. And the same people who don't have imagination thought it was a shitty plot twist. Execution of killing drama was only because you land in a carnival, and that was just a choice that backfired for many, but not all, and not a bad concept. The idea that the world ending transitioned into a carnival made my jaw drop and just go "Ohhhhh niiiice job!" at how they made you shift perspectives. The drama shifted more than dropped, but the shift also just made some people feel betrayed. What most don't understand is that they weren't NPCs in an MMO as we see it, it's a metaphor for reality and the concept of a higher soul.

umm....SO5 is taking place in S.D 537 which is about 200years b4 SO3. Unless they try to expand the game into 4D world, S03 will always be the final point of the story.
They could always just make it canon that the SO world survived deletion.

That's a given. Luther/Lucifers sister was monitoring the deletion as it happened and mysteriously vanished before the universe went blank. It's entirely likely that as their minds were real they couldn't be deleted, so without any kind of universe there they were simply floating in nothingness until the Sphere Company restored the universe.
There was a post game scene where they returned to Styx and the time gate was inactive, that could just be the 4D beings feeling like dicks for supporting luther/Lucifer and cutting the link until they decide what to do next.
