I'd rather question the presence of NGNL and Index tbh...
kono sekai ha ZANKOKU nanda!
don't be a weeaboo
Don't be a dyslexic. It's weaboo.
don't be a pussy
No Ergo Proxy?! How do you leave out an anime that's so chock-full of references to history/philosophy/tech, they needed separate slides after each episode to explain (or at least) them all! THAT'S what I'd call edifying, so it should've been included.
Well, the whole list isn't as much “Top 20 most edifying anime” as it is “Top 20 anime that people remember that might have been taken as edifying”. And considering that Ergo Proxy is mostly out of sight, the “remember” part isn't quite there.
Remembering wouldn't be the problem for someone who has seen Ergo Proxy. I doubt even 1% of people who have watched Death Note have also watched EP. Which is sad. Pino <3
Pino <3<3
Damn! I can't forget Pino.
See also Lain, Texhnholyze, and dozens of other not-popular anime that are ten more more edifying than some of the stuff on this list. The problem is that many people don't want to watch anime to be edified, so they have to pick from what they know - which is usually a handful of popular shows that don't really apply unless you squint really hard and pretend.
There seems to be some correlation between edifying and "so random you might as well think about life when watching them".
agree
no logh...
Kino no Tabi for those who really wants a philosophical anime
Let's not forget Texhnolyze - truly, an unrivaled level of writing in the anime medium. Even in comparison with the gems of the, so called, "golden age". (1995 - 2005)
Kino is sort of a hidden gem. People don't look at it and instantly think it will be interesting but it is as beautiful as Mushishi in my opinion. On another note moyashimon should be in the list too, not that it is deep or anything but at least there you learn useful stuff.
I agree
No Cromartie High School? That anime was fuckin deep man. Especially Kamiyama's espousing the theory of comparative categories of classes.
No Legend of the Galactic Heroes? WTF?
No Shinsekai Yori? :/ I would rather throw out Attack on Titan and put that in there, or Zankyou no Terror in there but ok.
There are so many titles missing from this list.
Air. Honey and Clover. Usagi Drop. If Evangeline counts, why not Steins;Gate? And Black Lagoon is specifically about Existentialism. Yukio references Sartre.
So a few points for even having this as a list, but zero points for the result.
this list is utterly horrible
Boku no Pico. No, i'm dead serious!
idiot that joke is too old learn new one moron
No Game No Life in the same list as Monster and Mushishi. I weep.
Just a pretentious way of asking "top anime that you like"
WHERE THA FUK IZ QUEENZ BLADE BRO. THIS "LIST" IS SOOOO RETARTED.
QUEENS BLADE SHOULD HAVE ALL TOP TEN SPOTS.
long live the Queen!
Dose edifying have anything to do with boners bro, because if so QUEENS BLADE SHOUD BE NUMERO UNO.
Kino's Journey belongs right up in there next to Mushishi.
I found that to be insanely thought-provoking.
Quality and Death Note shouldn't be on a same sentence.
agree
11. Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei
ZETSUBOUSHITA!!!
The most edifying anime is clearly Lucky Star.
yeah, that or cowboy bebop. It's got a lot of radical ed-ification.
Ya, wtf, where's Cowboy Bebop?! Only about half of this list makes any sense to me.
No; it is Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.
Some anime are in the top 20 just because the fad of the moment . (Shingeki no Kyojin, NGNL, ...)
70s Dog of Flanders anime. No matter how you become a HPITA(huge pain in the a$$),all dogs go to heaven and you are not.
Madhouse rules in this ranking (but most of this animes are adaptation from others sources).
Most of anime from one to ten and number twenty are shit tier.
Pillow froteur detected
ghost hound should have made the list
as much as I like Attack on Titan, it doesn't deserve to be on this list as do the majority :\
with the word "educate" doesn't that nearly eliminate everyone on the list? I never heard of .2 or .5 so I can't judge them.
#2 is about a lowlife street gambler
#5 is about a surgeon huntin a kid he saved that happens to be a mass murderer
So no, nothing positive to learn about ANY of the titles. As much as I like a lot of them, nothing edifying, really.
Monster's ending very much deserves to be here.
Derp, I think, derp, you're misinterpreting the list, derp.
I don't see how anything but dicks were stimulated by evangelion.
sayonara zetsubou sensei explained it vert well

...is that seriously Kaiji sitting at the pachinko at 0:35?
Damn. Never noticed it before.
Good point.
Then again psychology only applies to people without any real problems, so they make some up. A perfect fit for the crowd that voted that as number 3 for sure.
Evangelion gave people a demonstration on how pathetic Shinji was. In that respect, it was very educational.
Seriously, that was one of the few anime to ever really piss me off with how worthless he was.
So most of it flew right over your head.
Ya, it's not like it's at all reasonable for him to be emotionally scarred being a kid and all. He should just get over it because that's how it realistically works right? I guess Kamina should have been the main character and it would have been such a deeper animu.
That would have been so fuckin awesome.
