More like a dying population and a STAGNATE economy. In many rankings, Japan is in 4th place.

GDP is a measurement of the values the country is producing that year. A country can be producing a lot in value and still dying.
Big Tech upstarts from Japan have been virtually nil (Nothing like Uber, Google, Apple, Tesla, etc.). The youth is in decline which means when the baby boomers retire over there, the work force will be much smaller. And many Japanese people are not considering making babies either due to the costs of raising a child.
Also, Japan was in recession for virtually the past 2 decades and Abe is STILL struggle to revitalizing the economy even after Bank of Japan pumping over a TRILLION dollar into the economy.
Right now, the signs of small labor force is showing. Japan has the LEAST productive population in the advanced economies on a per hour. consequently, they also have some of the longest working hours due to stupid immigration laws and lack of new workforce.
Remember that girl from episode 1 of GTO where she almost killed herself due to her parents not coming home? That wasn't just fiction or even the past. It's reality. Parents work so long that they barely spend time with their kids or even have time to take care kids at all.
Of course, that's just the present trend. Anything can still happen to change Japan's circumstance.
