Revered anime magazine Newtype has unleashed its latest issue, naturally providing the next iteration of its fascinating character rankings – with Sword Art Online still holding fast to its pole position place as expected, although some unusually strong showings from the anime of yesteryear may hold some surprises.

The Free characters are actually decent. I'm not surprised to see them on a list. The SAO characters just shows that people have shit taste because there is nothing REMOTELY interesting about Kirito.
SAO thus far is the "Best Animated" series this season.
Which should tell you just how far Anime in general has fallen. I have to say 3 Quarters in a row and I've been really sick of REALLY BAD SEASONS from across the board. How long is it going to be until something GOOD actually shows up?

Most of the guys in Free show more depth in one episode than Kirito has in three whole seasons.
Like the series or not, most of the Free characters are well written. SAO characters are so one-dimensional and bland. Sure, put one of them on the list but THAT many SAO characters? No thanks.

Because bad writers had been dwelling in beta-male harem leads for the past 10 years for wish fulfillment animes, so only recently they notice that more wish fulfillment = more money and so began the trend of power trip "if you don't like me you're automatically pathetic and/or evil" logic Gary Stus.
It's a wonder 40 years old men receive millions of money and praises out of writing what is essentially the same to what is generally considered horrible when written by 12 years old girls.
I'm pretty sure there's a psychological explanation to all of it, it has to be some sort of engineering behind it.
But I still find those characters really unlikeable, no matter how well they may sell...
The thing is, how can you like complete non-characters like those? Especially after you're mentally old enough to stop projecting yourself into someone else? It makes no sense in a medium where you can't feel like you're in control of the scenario.
@19:41: Well that's good to hear, but then it still doesn't explain why they go around ranking the characters so highly when they're not the factors in the series' popularity. Just dumb loyalty for the series, I guess?
I have to say maybe its the teen demographic that Newtype caters to that really take to person like Kirito because it's the cool thing? I'll say I actually enjoy reading SAO more than watching it as it brings to light how simplistic the writing is though what do you really expect from a light novel? Overall, SAO is a good breezy read but I think the adaptations shows how rather light on story it actually has.
Maybe it's because most people don't really project themselves into these characters, and are genuinely sold into their story and circumstances?
Because the difference is (sadly) that 40 year-old FOREVER ARONE Jap otakus have MONEY. Whereas Stephenie Meyer's idiot teens do not.

Shitty self-insert Mary Sues sure are popular with nips.
Sadly Shiroe and Akatsuki are more appealing as characters than the characters from SAO. SAO character developement is flat anime-wise. And Luffy has annoyed me for a while now. Why are all the characters on this list, flat characters with no character growth.
Except for maybe Shiba Tatsuya and Chaika...but really, this is a horrible list. Hell put Kaneki Ken on the list and I'd be happy. Now that character is someone who's gone through character development...even though the characters life turns to hell in the process of his development.
How did a boring gary stu like Makoto get higher than Rin? Rin is hot as all hell and his personality is a million times more interesting.
And how did Shinon get anywhere near the top of the list? She's weak-minded and her so-called quirk is more annoying than interesting. So many better girls on that list. Even Gou, who doesn't take part in the action is both more attractive and a better character.
Watch more anime, kids. There are better ones just in the last few seasons of anime.
I know these polls are painful but it suggests SAO 2 will likely sell enough for the Alicization Arc to be animated. Which is easily the best arc in the series, just tolerate these shitty polls a little longer and get this arc in the bag. It'll be worth it.

That is a good arc and it covers more of the entertaining sci fi aspect of virtual reality that the first 3 arcs failed to cover. Mother's Rosario had only one redeeming quality and that is that it shows what a difference VR has made in the real world. The rest of the plot was a snore fest.
I agree, I guess we'll know Oct 22, when the first SAO 2 volume comes out.
Anyway I think they may have to skip some things to get a good amount of content covered in 24 episodes. That or they may have to do some OVAs. I'm not sure if Alicization can be covered in one full season.
If they can shit SAO Aincrad out of their asses in 14 episodes, manage to add content that wasn't there, and somehow fail to add crucial details that WERE... then I think they can Shit the rest of the series out of their asses too.
Fact: So far HALF of SAO II has been told in a series of FLASHBACKS in attempt to cover the section of the story that WASN'T TOLD because they were too busy trying to rush it out, and add suggestive content that don't seem to be in the original books. (of course I'm finally picking up the books now, but as of thus far, I don't see the emphasis that Kirito needed an all-female harem.)
Honestly, if we were looking at the Kirito from the book, and not the Kirito from the Anime - I'd agree with his listing here.
Hate to break it to you, anon 07:02, but the laughing coffin stuff had about 2 sentences in the first book. It was expanded upon for the first time in GGO.

Newtype lists are a complete joke. The mag itself is biased towards Gundam and "popular stuff" since that is where their core demographic is.
