i actually have a girlfriend over facebook who i met through our mutual love for anime like seikon no qwaser, but she's even more perverted than me and also likes anime like free... i fully support her for that, thankfully for me, and seriously if i didn't i'd just be a huge hypocrite, wouldn't I? but if i were unlucky enough to be like most of the guys here and was disgusted by her practicing basically the same kind of hobby i have for years and which she supports me for, i totally wouldn't blame her for hating me and i'd feel like an idiot for losing such an amazing friendship over such useless bigotry...

I can't think of a genre that is more boring and follow-the-checklist than this. Every time I try to watch a sports anime, I turn it off in under 5 minutes.
Despite the praise about Free, I still couldn't make it past 5 minutes.
It's not a sports anime. They don't have special moves that they suddenly pull out to win. They don't have races spanning multiple episodes, analyzing every part of their technique.
so? its not the sports that this is about, its the fangirlservice. i don't watch it myself yet still praise it for breaking barriers and showing the anime world that women are just as capable of having their drool shows as guys are... they have something of their own to watch now, and more to come, rather than complaining about what we watch... finally it's proven that were all not so different from each other and that girls can be just as horny and perverted and guys are.

Speaking as someone who cant stand anime that are just about hot guys and nothing else, I think it's a pretty good sports anime and it's also very funny at times.
Always amazed at the amount of guys who refuse to watch it because they dont want to look past the fanservice when 'looking past the fanservice' is what female anime fans have to do constantly. I mean look at Kill La Kill, every time someone complains about the fanservice in it an avalanche of people descend on them sayig 'you have to look PAST that! stop being shallow and only looking at the fanservice!' but when it comes to Free!, suddenly the guys dont want to look past the fanservice, and can't see the hilarious irony in that...
The guys I know that do watch it, all straight guys, admit to finding it entertaining. In the end I think it depends more on whether you like sports anime or not, not 'fujoshi anime', because I like Free and hate just about every other fujoshi anime.

I have a lot of male friends, mostly online but some offline. With the offline friend, we often dare eachother to watch anime we wouldnt normally (he will usually dare me to watch one of those big wobbly tit shows, and once I dared him to watch Free). He said that Free was 'actually a lot better than I thought' and ended up watching the whole thing, mostly finding the fanservice more funny than off-putting. And I'm pretty sure he's straight because he has a girlfriend and I dont see why he has any reason to lie to her.
Online friends could be lying about being straight but again, why the hell would they? They're pretty open about most other stuff and dont have a problem with gay people, unlike the guys here, although I doubt the guys here have many friends.
