Public Penis Riding “The Shame of Japan”

BBC coverage of the Kanamara matsuri has again exposed the glorious penis-worshiping Shinto heritage of Japan for all to admire, despite touching a raw nerve amongst crazed nationalists desperate to hide such a “shameful” spectacle from the prying eyes of hairy barbarians.

Kanamara Matsuri

Kanamara Festival Takes Place

Perhaps almost as entertaining as the main event itself is the pathetic spectacle of nationalists spewing their outrage at the prospect of a centuries old religious festival causing national embarrassment in the barbarian media:

“The shame of Japan!”

“I so wish they would stop this festival. There is such a thing as being too crass.”

“Shameful. I wish we could just give Kawasaki over to Korea or something.”

“How the BBC loves penis worshiping festivals.”

“The shame of Japan. Put a stop to these barbaric matsuri, what kind of foul of aborigines would worship stone phalluses!”

“This is an insult to our ancient ways. More so with all these crossdressers and new-halves, it is like something out of the mind of a Korean.”

“The only one insulting them is you – a matsuri is a matsuri whether it is 400 years old or a thousand years old.”

“That grand Japanese culture you rightists are so proud of. Let’s hope they keep sharing it with the world. I don’t mind this stuff and I’m certainly not going to try denying it.”

“Hentai Japs!”

“I wish they wouldn’t tell foreigners about these shameful festivals.”

“The people in the pictures all look like Koreans to me.”

“Kawasaki has a lot of Koreans, so this is obviously their doing and not real Japanese culture.”

“Make no mistake that this is not a real festival but a sham being propagated by Koreans to besmirch Japan’s image.”

“This one is actually a reconstruction started in 1977, based on an Edo period festival.”

“Read the BBC’s article, it is from the 17th century and was originally supposed to protect prostitutes from STDs. Japs really love to try to blame inconvenient facts they don’t like on others, don’t we?”

“I though this was a scene from a SOD work…”

“Foreigners sure do love Kanamara, don’t they?”

“The BBC hate Japan and are making fun of us, obviously.”

“The British just love crude things and enjoy the most filthy sort of humour. No surprise they like this.”

“Even the Japanese media refuses to cover this festival at all.”

“It’s the first I ever heard of it…”

“All nations of the world had phallic divinities at one point in there history, it is a little unusual that such a cult survived to the present day though.”

“Considering the state of Japan’s birth rate I think these fertility festivals are worth hanging on to.”

“How fucked up is this country when all our porn is mosaiced and there is a festival like this… talk about double standards.”

It's this whole civilized people's idea that having sex, or having genitals and mammaries to begin with, is shameful and that they should be inexplicably covered with clothing that starts all sorts of sexual anxiety issues with people of all ages and cultures.

Somehow sex is seen as "dirty" and "obscene", instead of being viewed as probably the most fun thing in the world. That, and, of course, the act of reproducing.

I see nothing wrong with worshiping one's power to reproduce, and it boggles my mind how even borderline fascists like Japanese are actually ashame of their own heritage.

The problem is that on one hand, you have a festival like this and on the other, the crazy censhorship of genitals in anything porn-related because "oh no, it's too shameful".

    It's just too ironic.

Traditionally the Japanese have had a pretty relaxed attitude towards sex, but in the country's great push towards modernization in the 1800s they decided to adopt everything western, including the Victorian morality that was fashionable at the time. That's why Japan is so contradictory.

It's not even Christian values. It's that whole "Let us emulate the white man" thing that they started and blended into their culture that screwed them up and has never stopped. A lot of their social problems can be traced back to the post WW2 period when this trend started.

The fun fact is that the christian god can be traced back to an old bronze age pantheon. Where the god is a god of war and booze. Man sought this god as the prime one and basically said "hey, remember the other guys in the panteheon? You're in charge of all that now".

Follow along with religions with single deities trying to actively snuff out and take over other cultures and civilizations, and you start seeing a picture.

Gives you something to think about.

The other fun fact is that you can't take everything Wikipedia says as absolute fact. There are competing theories about the origins of Yahweh worship, and the current state of any article simply reflects the prejudices of the last editor.

Anyway, does it really matter that Yahweh was worshipped as part of a pantheon? The Old Testament never said that there was only one god, it said that the Jews should only worship one god. And WTF is theology doing being discussed here anyway, shouldn't we talking about schoolgirls' panties or something?

To add to the irony, they're ashamed of how they're being perceived yet their reactions are what should truly bring shame to them. Modern Japan has become a culture that shames being different (hence the comment about crossdressers and newhalves), it quietly condemns people who act as individuals or outcasts outside of social groups through means such as group bullying. This is also the reason why "Otaku" and their culture are so frowned upon. There can be no understanding of people who are different, they are just shunned until they change or disappear.

On that note, while we still see conservative comments of that nature today, the younger generations seem to be drifting away from the idea that being an "individual" is such a bad thing, and that's also partially because older generations have been pushing THEM away for expressing themselves. At least, from my experience here. Certain prejudices still carry on through time, but most of them have been disappearing. Now it's just a matter of who they put in charge.

Same case in India because of the Victorian British rule. Religious Hindus have arguments with each other now about whither or not a phalic shape they worship is supposed to be the penis of a god or not (duh, it's just too obvious, especially since it's used in a fertility ritual). On top of that, many of the even most extreme religious Hindu leaders would faint at the idea that the mountain where the Ganges river originates from was named after a penis by their very own ancestors. The same country that created the kama sutra and erotic khajurao statues now has protest marches whenever a single billboard that shows too much skin is put up.

Who called the British "stupid"? If anything is to blame it's the victorian puritanism. It wasn't the "victorian" aspect of the British that ended practices like that. Such practices would have died down eventually on their own, but it's not like it really helped end the stigma of the use of women in Indian society... female new borns are still killed in rural areas on India. Can we blame the British for not putting an end to that?

What a totally fucked up argument based entirely on caricatures and self projection. If Japan is so not hung up on sex with all these public baths and penis festivals and free availability of ero manga / porn everywhere, why is there so much sex manga based on freaking public exhibitionism, hot springs and the like? These things should all be "unsexy" by now.

And it's not civilised to think having a dick is shameful. It's shameful however to only think with your dick as though it was the only thing which mattered. Everything in the correct context. But then some of us are not sexually frustrated and seeing "sexual repression" everywhere.

    [citation needed]

Being exposed to sex at a young age has psychological ramifications--you can type that into google and found multiple studies verifying this. Not to mention sex always carries risks of pregnancy and STDs. Having a healthy mindset about sex and parading on a wooden penis while licking a dick icecream are extremely different things.

"Somehow sex is seen as "dirty" and "obscene", instead of being viewed as probably the most fun thing in the world. That, and, of course, the act of reproducing."

Again, citation needed. The puritan mentality has changed dramatically in western/westernized countries. You can look at the mainstream media to see the glorification of sex. If anything, it's interesting to read that some Japanese are drawing the line at penis parades given how open their society is about sex.

How are they even being exposed to "sex" here? its just the human body... most kids see stuff like that on their own one way or another anyways, like real nudity from their classmates and friends, or these days just simple internet searches. It's always been like that since the dawn of human beings. This way at least they are under supervision and can ask questions and get answers from their own parents.

Ironically, that "glorification of sex in the west" is actually PERVERSION that stems out of repression and taboo culture. Not that there's anything wrong with perversion, I think it makes things more fun and interesting, but when that's all there is an all other sensibilities are thrown out the window (such as education which can only be brought about after enough repression has been subtracted) then it can lead to some problems. Honestly, although it's not something I personally want because I love perversion, but if we were all walking around naked all the time from birth to death (with any clothing only used for means related to physical health) then there would definitely be a decline in interest in the sale of nudity, sex, and porn in general.

Actually, no. For most of human history, adults had sex right in front of children, and children imitated adult sex as early as possible. This was the case in every stone age society, and was still the case in the trobriand islands, when the White man got there. No children were traumatized by sex because Trobriand society didn't stigmatize sex at all.

Exactly, and it wasn't even that long ago. The natives in America had entire families that slept together (their homes didn't have separated rooms, duh). So when mommy and daddy wanted to have sex they just did it, not finding it to be a problem if the kids were awake or asleep. Just check out that scene in the movie Dances With Wolves, for instance. But of course, the invasion of the white man promptly put an end to that...
