The annual SAO portable spin-off is set to arrive on schedule on the 24th of April in the form of Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment for the PSV, boasting quite passable graphics and plenty of hot Kirito x Asuna RPG action.
The game expands on from March’s SAO: Infinite Moment on the PSP in most respects, boasting enhanced combat, the addition of an original character in the form of Filia, and of course drastically improved and perhaps even acceptable graphics:

One day... One day they may finally make a SAO game where we get to create our own character and NOT have to play as Kirito!
.
.
.
Yeah we're never going to see that day.
Yeah, I actually like that he has a mature relationship with the heroine, but the Deux Ex Machina ending to Sword Art's first half sucked (I liked it up until then), then that half where they were faeries was just awful Gary Stu, at the point where he fights the enemy boss and wins just because I had to stop.
You can customize the avatar and even the player's voice in Hollow Fragment. The weapon system is probably the same as Infinity Moment, with all of the weapons and skills available.
So... yeah, they are making that game.
Uh... I don't know whether it's player's own custom character but, from http://images.sankakucomplex.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/sao-hollow-fragment-18.jpg and http://images.sankakucomplex.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/sao-hollow-fragment-16.jpg the player seems to be playing a character other than main characters from SAO. (Minagawa in both images.)
go play real MMO. n00b !
Or when we see that day everyone will make a Kirito like character and call themselfs Kirito.. lal
It's bad enough that cosplay events are flooded with him.
Is it too much to ask to play as Klein?
No it is not too much, he was a nice guy and would have liked to see him more as a supportive role.
So you play a game where they play a game.
Gameception?
Ever played any .hack// series?
No apparently SAO fans are all ignorant .hack pwns sao all day
SAO rips off .hack so bad it's not even funny.
It's just different enough to not be liable kinda like those rip off movies they show on the Syfy channel.
Not gonna talk about the game, but .Hack's anime sucked...
SOA better? HA!!! Now I KNOW you're trolling.
Here's my question: How many of these so-called Kiritoads/Asunards who mention .hack only do so because of Haseo? I mean, it's not like they're gonna remember Kite/BlackRose/Mistral/Piros/Helba/Gardenia/Natsume or any of the R1 characters - let alone any of the non-Haseo characters like Silabus/Gaspard/Bordeaux/Sirius/Taihaku/etc from the R2 versions.
I mean, heck, even Haseo's tag-buddies had more character development in the entirety of the R2 series than most peeps in SAO's two arcs combined have managed to get. But apparently, to the Saofegs, anime>video games in terms of plot evaluation - and by that logic, they'd also consider Naruto/Sasuke to be the best ninjas ebur. Becuz herpderp animuz.
I'm... not really sure where this came from. SAO is exceptionally well done. The .hack creator even admitted he drew out the story because he didn't know what to do with it, so it's not like it was melancholy for a reason.
I do not understand this. They were both good, with their own strengths, and SAO simply had a more strongly-assembled system of events objectively from a story standpoint. If you watched .hack when you were 13, go back and watch now and realize that being that melancholy is no longer 'deep' and never actually was. He was a purely reactionary character with few redeeming factors in an interesting environment. Neither is it 'emo' by the way, you fucking children can be incredibly stupid and have a binary sense of reality and need to stop being so shallow. Guess what, two shows about similar base concepts can BOTH be good. Novel fucking concept.
It's always fuckin' fans that ruin shows, never the shows themselves. By the way that means the show was never ruined, just your perception of stupid people who bring up the show, which by proxy you shelved in your brains as 'blame the show' that didn't deserve it.
Nevermind. Fuck it.
watched .hack long time ago on dvd, nothing special, as an MMO player, I didn't find .hack felt like an MMO at all, I don't even remember any meaningful combat action. SAO and Log Horizon beat .hack any day.
well that's just me. I know I know, some of you hate popular things just because you think it's cool to be anti-mainstream.
The thing about .hack// is that it knows it has plot holes. In fact the main point is a plot hole, how do people get stuck in a game even after being disconnected to it and their real body dying, when it's just visual and audio connection?
SAO uses direct brain feedback, which would NEVER be legalized, let alone safe, and by the time it was safe people wouldn't bother using it for gaming.
Imagine someone coming out with the product then some hacker wants to use it to make people send him money by planting the order in their head?
How would they calibrate it? Everybody's brain is different.
They could even directly link the problems to the use of that device in SAO, in .hack// the HMD seems like it'd be impossible to cause that crap.
And on top of them narrowing down the problems to the device in SAO, wouldn't such a massive problem that ends with THOUSANDS of people hospitalized and DEAD cause the immediate banning of such devices? And then the legal action against the game and device's creator so something like that never happens again? Seriously, that 2nd game/2nd season would never have happened when you think about it.
Popular and good aren't the same. And also, most of you folks didn't know of .hack because it wasn't released the past three years, you bunch of goldfishes.
I say this all the time but idiots who only watched the SAO anime think it's some sort of revolutionary story. Despite .Hack coming up with this sort of story concept years ago before Shit Art Online. Damn hipster douchebags
Except SAO was conceptualized before .hack was.
And they both have their roots from other series such as Criss Cross.
Lol at the people saying SAO rips off .hack// when SAO was written back in 2002. Same year .hack//sign was released.
You're upset why? Because SOA got more popular then hack. series? And yes hack. Was first but SOA did it better in anime, just something you have to accept and move on already not like anyone said hack. Suck ass
Well maybe .hack would have been more popular if they didn't release it in SEVEN games when there was barely enough story for two. Particularly the first 4 games: The only thing I can remember is that event where Kite, Blackrose and that Axe girl went to a dungeon and it got all love-triangle like. Other than that? Oh yeah, level up, defeat a mid-boss, defeat a Phase. Next game. Aaaaaand again. Aaaaaand again. The last boss wasn't even something special. More tiresome than anything else.
The GU games were at least a bit more memorable. Atoli was barely tolerable though. The arena parts. In the first game, good idea. In the second I was like "Again?". By the third game it got ridiculous. Why do they waste my time with filler material? And then I defeated Ovan and suddenly Cubia appeared out of nowhere. I will never understand why they couldn't just have ended it with Ovan. All they wanted to do is cash in on another game.
All that said, this has nothing to do with "hack is better than SAO" or the other way around. It's just that people always say that even though the games were not that good.
What makes SAO better is the fact that you're actually in the game, and all your senses are focused in that world. .Hack// is really just what you'd get if you made an mmo designed for the Oculus Rift.
Two different things, SAO, you die, .hack// you fall in a coma.
You really missed a lot of .hack// there buddy. When someone got trapped in the game they experienced it directly, feelings and all, so really SAO directly ripped that concept off of .hack// with the only difference being that they were stuck there as a group for a much longer time in SAO.
Most of .hack's plot development took place in the games anyways - both for R1 and R2. And if you actually play the entirety of both, you realize that the characters aren't two-faced as you'd believe them to be.
I mean, just from what I've seen, the Kirito/Asuna pair has half the character development that Haseo/Atoli got (or to use an R1 example, Kite/BlackRose), and I for one don't see the fadgasms ceasing anytime soon.
I mean, heck - during the R2 fadgasm period, I hardly saw any of the females get name-spammed in MMOs (if I did, it usually was Alkaid - despite the fact that she was a side character for almost all of R2's game plot).
Kirito is only a bad Haseo ripoff(double swords, black attire, battle skills superior to other players). Kawahara desperately tries to make Kirito an antihero, continuously reminding us how he is antisocial yet throws him multiple ultra incompetent side characters at him just so he can save and be everyone's Superman for no particular reason, resulting in a bland and annoying Marty Stu.
SAO just tries to ante up what .hack already established "oh so if people goes coma when they die in an MMO, I'll just top that and make them die for real!", a desperate attempt that ultimately feels like a bad imitator who miserably failed in trying to top its predecessor.
.hack's story have much more feels than SAO, the characters have more depths and the plot progression actually made sense, too bad it was born at the wrong time.
While waiting for the first SAO volume to be fully translated back in the day, I went through the whole .hack// franchise to sate my VRMMO taste, minus a few novels that weren't translated like .hack//Zero, and those .hack//G.U. novels since they weren't canon. It was an awesome experience. AI-Buster really reminded me of SAO, and .hack//G.U. was freakin' epic(played the undub).
However, I still felt that the first volume of SAO left a bigger impact. I mean, in .hack// you'd have to be trapped in the game to have direct experience, the game originally isn't suppose to be played that way. It's just you with a headset and a controller.
While SAO really is a VRMMO where you're really in the game as intended, and the novels focused on that aspect, which I really enjoyed. People can say whatever they want, but this is one time period I would want to be in. Just no, death-in-game = dying IRL please. Probably would have to wait an extra year for ALO.
Yo dawg, we heard you liked Games in your games. So we put a .hack minigame in your game about playing a game...
Meh, all these spinoff games that have nothing to do with the anime/novel story.
For a second there it made me think I missed a novel or something.
>Image 16 and 18
Party!! (Puns intended)
I don't think I've seen this many in an offline RPG... (though the plot is MMORPG itself xD)
Trivia: that new girl Filia is voiced by Ishikawa Yui, better known as Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan.
Before doing Mikasa, Ishikawa was mainly a stage actress, so her anime CV isn't that big, but we might be seeing a lot more of her from now on thanks to AoT's runaway success.
that new blond girl is really ugly
.hack vs SAO
it's like ...
touch based dumb phone / windows mobile
vs
iPhone
just because it arrived earlier, doesn't mean it's better ...
deal with it
I wish they'd make a new season..
SAO + Kirito and Asuna = MEXICAN NOVEL.
SAO whiout that 2 = Tons better plot.
Hey Square Enix!! Take a note on the cell shaded anime style characters, and start making Final Fantasy like this again!
I'll probably be Kirito #6,123,321.
Why use so much english if it's not going to be released outside Japan anyway? To make it more MMO'ish?
I just hate it when games like this get released and they stay in Japan. Anime-style games can sell well outside Japan, it has already been proved by Tales of-series, Ni no Kuni and many other games. SAO is also really big anime even outside japan, almost everyone who watches anime has seen it.
Import it.
Western release. Hazy.
The post is tagged PSP, but the box clearly says VITA.
http://www.moddb.com/games/the-sao-project Tremble with fear... Or anticipation, or whatever...
Now, this gameplay is better (for me) than the PSP ver. game because preferable to have battle like this (Kingdom Hearts/MonHun alike, or realtime battle?).
Also, I'm not complaining, but... a female character again? (I know it's nowadays selling point) I know Kirito's building up a harem which I don't hate it, but at least, for once, create another male main character which fight along with Kirito.
SAO arc again? Hmmm... I wonder if they're going to make ALO and GGO (I like GGO just because of Sinon :v) in game too...
The one with the black/brown hair behind Kirito in the cover art is Sinon. She was in Infinity Moment, too. Although both her ALO and GGO outfits are just better than this one :( Let's just wait for second season of the anime.
The Alicialization arc has Eugio as the secondary protagonist. That arc is a pretty interesting delve into the sci-fi of virtual worlds.
I meant for game adaption =/
Interesting indeed. Easily taken apart from the science side of things if you have even just basic knowledge of neurology, quantum mechanics and (quantum) information theory, but gotta hand it to the author, he really put thought into this. My only qualms would be that it could have easily been more robust science-wise had he done a few things differently with the story and parts of the premise. Still the most intriguing take on VR-themed sci-fi in a long time (and that time includes The Matrix).
That arc doesn't make for a good game adaptation though.
Welp, I just noticed Shino is there too.
Banzai!
And I kinda like pic 16 and 18... Party system! o.o
Want a male as Kirito's main supporting character? Read Alicication... doesn't lend itself very well to any potential game adaptations though.
Seems pretty accurate to me. A lot of male players plays as female for the outfits.
Maybe it's secretly a male! :V
The mirror from the first part exposed everyone for what they were, whether male or female.
