Shingeki no Kyojin Movie = “Live Action”

Titanic blockbuster Shingeki no Kyojin has delivered a shock to fans in the form of a 2015 live action adaptation, which most seem to believe will only be a disaster of appropriately gigantic proportions.
The movie’s staff include director Shinji Higuchi (of Gonzo extraction and best known for directing “Japan Sinks”), and script writing by Yuusuke Watanabe (whose writing credits include the Gantz movie) and Tomohiro Machiyama (a film critic).
Plenty of cosplay and parody material reveals fans are not entirely hostile to the idea of live action titans:
“What will happen if we Japanese make it”:
With the record of Japanese live action movie adaptations of popular manga franchises being what it is, it would be something of an understatement to say there is scepticism about the movie’s prospects:
“It’s over…”
“I can not believe they are making this live action and not an anime movie.”
“And it is all by Japanese, great.”
“Wasn’t the setting mostly devoid of Asians?”
“The protagonist is basically Germanic. Bit of a joke to cast Japanese in it.”
“It’ll just be more trash like Gantz.”
“Just make them into samurai and do a Japanese version.”
“They should get an all-foreign cast and do it overseas. Japanese actors are too low level.”
“Please just sell it to America.”
“What the hell is Machiyama doing involved with this?”
“It doesn’t matter who is doing what. All you need to know is that it is live action so this will surely be trash.”
“Japan’s movie industry does a better job at chewing up and destroying content than any titan could…”

This kind of film should be made by a American studio.
Japanese special effects are bad.
Plus a American film would have a actors of different ethnicities not just Japanese people in blonde wigs.
Japanese special effects are bad? You have not seen much live action as of late. Over the past several years, budgets have been way up and some very impressive movies have been done. Devilman and Casshan were some good starts. Plus Higuchi Shinji has taken over and if you have seen Evangelion 3.0, then im sure u have seen the 10min short with the live action sequence of the eva destroying the city. Im anxious to see how it will handle and im sure it will come out right.
no hes right, Japanese suck at making movies.
Just look at Transformers, the effects are great, the story on the other hand... But Japanese stories can get easily trainwrecked. Just look at Valvrave!
I'd propose Japanese directors and writers with English cast. But that's just me.
Transformers is the worst possible example you could bring forth. Yeah, the CGI and effects were good but come on, it's Micheal Bay.
I agree with that but I also think that American suck at making stories. The effect may be good but I'm not confidence with the story.
That's a good point actually. I get that they should speak Japanese given that it's their primary audience, but making a blonde, blue-eyed anime character Japanese in live action is just lazy casting, in my opinion. Either that or there just aren't many good actors/actresses who are white and speak fluent Japanese.
actually, there are but it seems to the audience, having a gaijin is like being invaded. to add, there's also kpop stars and dramas horning in the japanese showbiz.
not that i don't mind 'murica making SnK live movie but im still not over the fact that dragon ball, dead or alive, tekken was a heaping pile of american crap. somehow, somewhere, they mess it up so im not too trusting if they can do it right just basing on SFX
They should do what they did with Nodame Cantabile's cast, get actual foreign actors who speak fluent Japanese to play the characters of certain nationality/ethnicity. It worked very well (they dropped the ball with Stresseman but that's about it) and the less shown foreign actors would get dubbed in Japanese like Viera (but that wouldn't work in Shingeki).
But also see the problem in Shingeki being done in Japan. Eren is supposedly European, same as most of the cast. I think Mikasa is the only Asian (in the story they say Asian/Oriental people are rare and thus more valuable in the slave market, that's why she's the only one so far to have a Japanese name) so it'd be hard for a Japanese studio to make this movie.
Other than Mikasa, all other characters in Shingeki no Kyojin are European. Eren Jaeger is GERMAN for christsakes. They should be casted as such.
An American studio doing the production would make it amazing, they just need a director that is passionate about the source material.
For this kind of movie Guillermo del Toro would be perfect.
Its up his alley when it comes to creepy and bloody. And it needs to be bloody and in your face.
You speak as if Hollywood would know how to treat the project. The screenplay alone would be a nightmare not a one of your big name directors on the A or B list would touch. Further, it wouldn't sell—I can only think of a few studios that would risk working on a low-return venture. To say nothing of the actual company houses that would take one look at the story and go "Screw this, turn it into a Paranormal Activity slasher flick—that'll bring in the dollars".
You'd need someone who could work closely with Isayama on making a feasible screenplay, you'd need a producer that wouldn't take it in the backside from the studio execs, therefore making the movie suck. You'd need a Director willing to turn this into a black moral questioning humanitarian piece littered with natural disaster-level action scenes. And you'd need a casting director that won't be stupid enough to throw B/A list celebs onto the project for the sake of naming power.
Story, Executive Meddling, and Stars are your three biggest reasons Hollywood doesn't need to touch this project. They'd screw it over worse than Japan's LA side ever could.
The only way this could work is with a Hollywood budget and cast.
and with Hollywood writers?
NO
Goyer and Nolan would be good for writing this adaptation (especially that angst, so much angst), and Del Toro would be perfect for directing. His work directing giant-anything has been pretty damn awesome.
Lol the One thing Hollywood might not flop is action
Oh, please. Live action was in development even before the anime was announced. People are overreacting.
this is one of those anime that are best off staying anime; we don't want another Dragon Ball Evolution
puttin all muh nopes in a bag
Shitty shit.
if they could make a poster more awesome than that fan art, then ill reconsider
I actually think it might be really successful if Hollywood made a film based on it. The concept of titan sized enemies is like Pacific Rim, if they use special effects like in that one it would be good. Also it doesn't have much asian content in it, so people who aren't into anime or whatever wouldn't feel weird while watching it
Be careful of what you wish for, if that gigantic asshole Paul WS Anderson gets his shitty hands on this, and he will, then you can kiss a good plot goodbye, just like in Resident Evil.
For those who think everything from japan is gold: It's going to suck.
Japanese script + American production (Legendary Pictures as example) + good international cast = A instant classic in SciFi gender.
Talking just of FX its like... Pacific Rim VS 300 hahaha.
O.o there are plenty of foreigners in japan who are fluent in japanese, it would just be up to the studio to hire in a mostly gaijin cast..
Gantz wasn't that bad . . infact I thought it was good for a Japanese Live Action adapdation.
This is a terrible idea. Just make into a animated movie.
Umm, just so you know, two anime films based on the series are in production. The first film is due on November 22, 2014 and the second film is coming in 2015. I personally don't see anything "terrible" with this like, at all. Soooo, yeah.
Let's make this a Uwe Boll / Micheal Bay / M.Night Shyamalan / Ryuhei Kitamura production.

The tears won't last forever, but as long as we're here, we might as well cry together
Better now or never
Insanity before pleasure
Uwe Boll and the Crew, who you know do it better?
Yeah right, no matter what, we get paid right?
So when you ruin something, make sure you do it right ♫♫♫♫
All hope is dead plain and simple.
Does it even matter?
I can't recall good live-action adaptations.
I am now reminded of Dragonball.
Personaly, Gantz was a pretty ok one.
Erabe!
1. Japan makes the live action adaptation
2. Hollywood makes the live action adaptation
Choose wisely. Either way, its fucked anyway.
Hmm well 5 years is a long time to wait, I'll probably be into something else when that rolls by.
Richard Stallman as that bearded titan... Oh God, it's perfect.
XD, I know it
bertholtd is like a major villain in that poster
Well...he kinda IS.
Done by Hollywood?
YES
Done in Japan?
NO!
NO NO!
NO NO NO!
Most "Live Action" Animes dont come even close to their drawn Pendants.
Clearly this is a job for Michael Bay and JJ Abrams, their boom and shine is exactly what Titan needs.
Fuck that! If Michael Bay got a hold of it Eren would be dead within fifteen minutes for no logical reason, Armin would be some guy with a professional wrestlers build and Mikasa would be the whitest mexican ever, all the while....running and explosions.
meh, we already had Jagers in pacievangelion rim
tell me a good example of live action movie.
i only heard the bad ones...
Kenshin!
Not even kenshin was that great. Like saying silent hill is a great masterpiece
Yamato was excellent
Justin Bieber as Eren. I can see it when I close my eyes. Then I wake up screaming.
Duuuude, you should give up drugs.
Damn. It was inevitable, but damn.
Though I dunno if Hollywood could do it any better.
Realistically speaking Hollywood might not have been any better because I doubt they could have secured a big enough budget and a good director interested in the project. Too little money and a B movie director will produce garbage no matter where it's made.
However, the Japanese themselves will fail invariably because they simply couldn't ever have the resources, plus most of the cast and environment was quite specifically European looking. But if they drop that and instead relocate it to a Japanese setting, renaming the characters in the process, they could make just another goofy Japanese live action movie, I suppose.
Maybe not, but at least Hollywood makes nice special effects, if nothing else.
If you have the budget for it. B movies usually don't have that kind of money.
