Ultimate production controversy anime Aku no Hana is still proving as incendiary as ever, with the rotoscope treatment of the original’s “reverse rape” scene setting hearts aflutter for the eventual sex scenes present in the manga, and “fans” generally of the opinion that series could have dominated the season had it been animated properly…
The original:
The series is proving so provocative it seems nobody has thought to stop watching it:
“Best episode yet!”
“I don’t get why the protagonist is so upset about being assaulted like that!”
“If only this was properly made it would have been awesome. I really wanted to see the art from the original…”
“The scene where she stripped and changed him got me excited. Am I a pervert?”
“I wish they could have at least synced the dialogue to the mouth movements.”
“The rotoscoping worked really well for the reverse rape scene. Really fresh…”
“If they do the sex like this it will be good!”
“Considering how difficult it is to strip someone’s clothes off like that, he pretty much must have consented.”
“Their eyebrows keep disappearing from scene to scene, the guys animating this are totally inconsistent.”
“At this pace they will get to his deflowering soon. If this had used the original’s character designs it would have dominated the season, wouldn’t it?”
Out of context that gif is intense and disturbing to watch. Which I would assume is the point of the scene. I have to applaud it.
With that said I’m guessing the manga must have a loyal fallowing that is flipping their shit about the deviation from its original style. I can understand that and feel bad for them because this will probably be their only chance to see an anime of one of their favored mangs. But fuck what the hell is wrong with Japan? This has legitimate artistic merit. They need to stop acting like a bunch of pissy American girls.
some people are just happy with the same ole shit, we know whats up though. this animated series will pave the way for the rest of the animes that follow in their footsteps – innovative and hella artistic.
From what I hear, it has a good premise, but does not deserve the term ANIME. It is Animated Live Action.
and to be honest, the characters look crappy in the anime compared to the manga, and this is coming from a ‘moetard’ too.
I have seen better character design in the aku no hana manga.
This may be coming from a person on the sidelines, not watching the series, but you have to understand, this has never been done before.
First, remember that this is an adaptation. Many adaptations even sack the original stories, whereas this one has so far followed the plot very closely. It seems obvious to me that the art style was chosen to tailor fit the story. It is an ugly story with ugly characters (I have read the manga up to this date). Also for those commenting on the realism being done poorly (i.e. the rotoscoping being poor), that is to achieve a surrealist look rather than realist, which is quite fitting given the subject matter. The lack of discernible emotion is for a similar reason. These are characters that are eventually to evoke an sense of extreme emptiness and lack of purpose, giving them strongly visible emotion runs counter to that and actually diminishes the story. The manga tells a strong plot, but the art is actually quite dissonant and almost makes light of the subject matter. Or rather, the art of the manga fails to evoke the instability of the characters, perhaps because there are many other manga that use similar styles in which the strange characters are in fact fully sane and well meaning. Numerous examples of such can be seen even looking just in anime from this season and last, so to use a more typically animation style would likely not have elicited the visceral feelings that this incarnation does. I’m not saying this style is pretty, I’m saying that it was never meant to be, and is more fitting as it is. I will freely say that I find this style difficult to watch, but minds as disturbed as those of these character really should be difficult to watch. I ask that anyone that wishes to downvote this comment first read some of the works of Baudelaire and his contemporaries, and draw the appropriate parallels to the manga.
I’m having the weirdest boner right now.
WHO CARES! JUST SOME STUPID CARTOON SHIT THE ZIONISTS WANT YOU TO LOOK AT AND BE SHIT TO THEM SO THEY CAN DO SHIT TO YOU!
maybe because baudeliere wouldnt be happy to see fans rejoice for the success of the anime..
he would find it boring..
hahaha it all makes sense to me now..
Im soooo lost. I actually enjoy the art style they use… Maybe its because I didnt read the manga.
Summary of the basic arguments on this thread (and every other aku no hana thread I’ve read here):
hater: This anime looks ugly! They should have used a different style.
another hater: This anime is awesome and you’re shallow for not liking it because of the art.
hater: No, you’re shallow because you just want to rage against moe. The manga isn’t even moe.
another hater: No, you just want to rage against everything that’s different. You just want the same run-of-the-mill art that everyone else uses. moetard.
hater: fuck you asshole. You wouldn’t know good art if it sodomized you.
another hater: Fuck yourself moetard. You’ll never get a girlfriend because moetards never get girlfriends.
Hater then gouges another hater’s eyes out with a pencil, after which another hater tears off one of hater’s arms. In the ensuing battle no limb is left untorn. Both haters die of blood loss, and the rest of us are free to watch the anime or not watch it based on whatever criteria we want. The end.
I took just a bit of poetic license on the last part.
yaoi anime… 🙁
I cannot get over how fucking incredible this show is.
After I found all of the anime episodes out, I then needed to find the manga. I read the whole series all last night. I can’t believe it. These teens are seriously crazy. Unfortunately there was only one sex scene and it happened long after many events took place. I don’t think I’ll be in the anime soon. Anyway Sankaku Complex, thanks to you I found this manga. If anyone else enjoys dominant school girls who control shy school boys you should also check out Sundome. It’s more light hearted but seriously ecchi.
It doesn’t even look human anymore the more this anime progresses.
I actually kind of like the art of the anime. It contributes to a more realistic feel by breaking out of the standard. More than the art though the dialogue is wonderfully written and acted. Everything seems to flow very well. I can understand people being upset or disappointed however after seeing the manga art style. They really did go 180 degrees on that one.
From my eyes…. all i see is A man raping a girl!! WTF!!
Just a dose of real life folks, Sankaku Complex is NOT a “news” website. It is a BLOG 🙂
I like this anime. Never read the manga, but thought I thought the art was whack, I started to appreciate what they were doing. More animation, realistic speaking compared to other anime, and they actually look Japanese. If they followed the manga, it would probably look more up-to-date traditional (aka generic) to me. Love anime, but getting sick of cliches.
I just hope that there might be a chance that it will be rebooted from another studio, the artstyle is more of “I am a hero” than “Aku no Hana”. I like to have my anime that are based on manga in the same style as the manga.
Yeah, as much as I wanna watch this, the horrible char designs in the anime stops me, what the hell were they thinking?
Its so fucking hideous…
is he smiling or grinning? i would hope smiling?
Aku no Hana could really be the best of the season if it wasn’t for this fucking studio.
The art of the anime, compared to the manga, is a piece of shit.
Btw, i’ve read untill the chapter 44 from volume 9, so I can tell how fucking awesome Aku no Hana is.
My main gripe with the rotoscoping thenique is that it lacks detail. Complex facial expressions are near impossible to pull off with it, at least in this particular example. And, since the anime relies much on the emotions of the characters, that’s a big problem.
the flow of character movements is just real life natural movement, as if it is a video of a dorama, then captured every 1 second, make it 2D, then animate it
feels like watching stop motion film in anime version
This is genius, absolutely genius. They’re filtering the penis-controlled drones from the fans who will love the story no matter what.
No shadows, no highlights, no definition, no gigantic tits, traced from real life acting, the ultimate cheapskate solution that burns the asses of horndogs.
i have no fucking idea how the artist/author would have agreed with this kind of artwork.
“Ultimate production controversy anime…”
Face it, like with everything else Artefact just wants to really call it “Production scandal anime,” but he won’t because he’s already been facing threats of lawsuits for defaming others with the “scandal” title
I’ve seen a lot of David Attenborough nature shows over the years, but this, this is horrifying…. It’s like watching a chimp assault a human….
It’s still pretty awesome.
I can’t watch this series because everyone looks the same. It’s one thing is the character designs are similar but if you struggle to identify the character’s genders, I may as well be watching jellyfish.
if you cant tell the difference between a man and a woman, you must have something wrong with you. am i the only one who likes the abstract anime series like, “kaiba, mind game, kuuchuu buranko, and kemonozume”!?
If people use this on a crappy / generic plot
Doubt people would be this forgiving
This was rotoscoped… so some dude actually got stripped like that?
Hahaha, omg, reverse rapist :3 You know, just like a real person, she looks much better in some angles and expressions than others…
I actually like this anime a lot. The animation is a little choppy and kinda annoying but the actual artwork is really good in my opinion. The characters actually look Japanese for once. Not to mention, the story is good. Nakamura is cute also!
i completely agree, but i must be the only one who likes everything about this anime series, and just wish that there was a second season!!!!!yes nakamura does look cute, and has hella sex appeal. lol
FFS. For once an anime tries to look a little different and original and all you faggots piss and moan.
finally, sum1 i can completely agree with!
After awhile the art style begin to look good, maybe some people haven’t get used to it yet.
I still don’t think partially tracing live footage is a style. There is virtually no imparting of perception, interpretation or expression in tracing.
The anime is going good I moved it from the bottom of my list to 2nd only to kuroneko.
Just because the animation is different doesnt mean it bad. I find nothing wrong with it and I enjoy the change of pace. I didnt read the manga so I don’t know where the story is going but if its as deep and intense as it seems then Im glad they chose this animation style because it says this is not your typical cute highschool girls anime story. bitches.
This shit had no chance of being anything but complete garbage. The manga is some of the most repulsive trash I have ever seen. It’s extremely sad that this has even a modicum of popularity.
Sawa is actually starting to be a little more attractive to me.
I don’t know why and somehow it took 3 episodes, but I fucking love this show now and look forward to it each week.
[Pyon!]
it took ya fucking long enough! lol
Well at least the eye quality seem to be improving.
I swear, I’m gonna throw all my money to whoever studio that will PROPERLY re-animate this adaptation.
Moe = cute AND innocent (as pure). There the right definition for you.
apparently japan hires animators high as fuck
I heard Japan pays animators a pittance. I hope they get paid more than the tracers responsible for this.
Rough copy looks good… I’ll watch it once they draw the rest of the lines on in the blu ray version.
I think I would like this if I was 14 again.
that animation style blows, I couldent even sit through five minuts of it
Good. No one’s forcing you to.
rotoscope version looks very convincing, manga version looks like fantasy
anyway sync dialogue to mouth movement is an art lost to Japanese seiyuu, I suspect it is due to seiyuu only given script but not the film when doing their job.
this is a very annoying trend when you find that English dubs have better sync than Japanese original voice.
Im sorry. The manga is ugly as hell too.
Prepare to be downvoted by the people who worship that style.
I’ve watched the first two episodes so far and this seems like it would be a Slice of Life Romantic Comedy if it just used different music.
I think it’s excellent.
Love the rotoscoped animation.
Beautiful backgrounds and music. Actual voices that sound like real humans. I don’t know what is ‘ugly’. The characters look like actual people (because they probably are). It makes the entire story that much stronger.
If this was original it would be an interesting (yet ugly) experiment but it’s not. It may of been top anime of the season with it’s creepy characters and story since all the other shows except perhaps Titan wouldn’t be up to par.
I have never seen an anime which could portray emotions in a natural and realistic way, it always felt flawed and unrealistic at some level. The voice acting in Aku no Hana is beyond anything else around, it’s natural and lacks all the cute voicing and the phony sound smirks. I’m not saying it is perfect but to me it feels great because they dared to be different and of course the reasons above.
I’m just disgusted by the art of the anime… if only they kept the original style instead of this creepy one…
Well, the thing is I am actually disgusted of you.
Then.. it wouldn’t be as creepy?
I’m very certain that this ugly rotoscoping has nothing to do with the studio trying to make the characters creepy.
In fact, i’m certain it’s ugly because they simply suck at this medium.
exactly.
Interesting. That’s the entire point of the anime.
Which company animated this…
Who’s the animator…
In all honesty a girl forcing you into womens clothing is beyond borderline creepy this shit is weird!!
Didn’t take her much force. He’s a pansy.
“reverse rape”?
What is this double standard shit?
Rape is rape!
Not in glorious gender-equality-land.
It’s not even considered rape if a woman does it.
They can fix it in the blue-ray…maybe.
it’s just too ugly.
it’s just too ugly.
abomination
Ugh…Why did they have to ruin it like this!? >_<
I like the way it looks, the people actually look asian.
I wonder if people complain about The Simpsons not looking like real Americans.
The moral of this anime is that you should just read the manga.
omg ugly animation! lol
To be fair,
at least this series doesn’t use caucasian people in place of Japanese people.
This may be ugly to some people, but if Japanese animated themselves to look Japanese instead of Caucasian from the start, this would be the result.
I can actually tell by the character design that I’m looking at Asian folk.
Kudos to this series for giving something real.
Maybe I should seriously consider taking advantage of consumers who greatly appreciate the realism of taking live footage and tracing it as lazily as possible. Could rake in big bucks!
she reminds me of an alligator.
Alligator no Hana.
What is the point of rotoscope? If you have it already done in real life what’s the point in animating it?
Because the story is quite distilled and arid if you think about it. Ancient Greek drama of sorts. They can bounce around more thought in 5 minutes of Yahari than they do in 60 here. The live action would turn out abysmally boring as is, and even if improved it would fall in line with many European movies from the 80s, when even those aimed at kids radiated similar musty ambience. What should belong in the ‘once is enough’ category has already been done to the death, so, just as you say, there wouldn’t be as much incentive to keep it that way. Animating it means more flexibility in shaping the appeal, whether for instrumental or message-related purposes.
Maybe the Blu Ray release will be the live action footage. HI-DEF EDITION! “Look at the amazing photorealistic detail we added!”
They were trying to be cheap as fuck and call it a anime instead of spending the money on proper animation.
You’re essentially filming the thing twice(life cast then roto), so I don’t understand how you’d think it was cheaper lol.
They wanted a jDrama, the studio said “no”, so they went with this. They felt that animating it normally wouldn’t have worked, and the more I watch the more I agree with them.
Only rotoscoping isn’t cheaper.
Could have been the best show this season….but they had to go with the “fresh” feeling to appeal to the masochistic retards that like watching this abomination
>masochistic retards
That would be TLRD fanbois.
The whole story is masochistic. You just don’t have any nice-looking straws to grasp at, so you’re seeing it for what it really is. Too bad that’s too much for you.
The opted to say a bug FUCK YOU METARDS; this is not for you, feel the pain, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Then DVD sales figure comes in. Fuck you career, mother’s basement is looking bright.
Worth of an anime? More like worth of the company’s stock prices. It’s a sinker, time to sell. Hello layoffs.
Hahahaha, who says they are relying in blu-ray sales?
You hardcore otaku think the worth of an anime comes down to the fucking discs it sales! As expected of your kind, always shallowly looking at supremacy for your fav series in disc sales.!
Call me a moetard or whatever, I don’t like the looks of it, I am no fan of rotoscoping, but my problem here is that it is shitty rotoscoping.
And a non-moetard would love this… stuff…
You’re not a moetard for disliking the look of it. That’s the point. It’s not sugarcoating the ugliness with beauty.
A moetard would be someone who can’t watch this because it isn’t like a moe anime, either in looks or subject matter.
No man, the joke is on you.
Many people around here know the manga, so they basically already like the story, the feel of this piece of work. However, the rotoscoping IS bad. No matter how much you live in denial, it is BAD. And that won’t change even if you decide to insult people because they rightfully call out this undeserved treatment of the material.
The author has approved of this work but that means nothing. Manga and “animation” are two separate entities and for all it’s worth, people have a right to judge on their own tastes.
I have no trouble with calling the art of this here ugly. That has bearing on the story that is behind all that. I do think that another art direction would have been a LOT better. And yes, the ugliness always provokes a bad aftertaste when watching this. It’s ugly because it was done bad. Not because it is rotoscoping.
I know that both of you want to seem sophisticated or something like that.
Come on, both of you are moetards.
Just admit it.
Exactly. People keep lumping everything together because their tiny brains are incapable of comprehending separate concepts.
Probably the same people who go around beating up anyone with dark-ish skin over the Boston bombing.
Should we just consider the artstyle Wabi-Sabi?
So basically, beautiful things can win #1 because they’re beautiful, but ugly things can never win even if they deserve it. I see, I’m in highschool again.
I can’t wait to see what ugly anime wins #1 simply because it hides that ugliness behind slick visuals.
I’ve already written the company to redo the anime, cause I know they ain’t getting NOTHING for the Blue Rays, if they would even dare. I mean, I wouldn’t pirate this anime even if I get paid to.
However I took a peek at the manga and got hooked.
I dunno, there seem to be a ton of people with bad taste who think this is the best thing in the universe. They will probably invest their life savings into the Blu Rays.
Maybe they should look up decent rotoscoping from the last century and spend their money on that instead.
Mission accomplished the, how tells you its going for fucking bluray sales?
Looks beautiful: $$$
Looks ugly like the rest of the story: WAH!!
I love how whenever someone says that it looks shitty (and it does) they always get accused of being a MOETARD
Isn’t it only Moetards bitch?
I love how the people who don’t agree that it’s ugly and not worth watching are instantly downvoted into oblivion.
They’re the bronies of animu and mango.
moetards are like dirty cockroaches, they invade anything and everything and are a pest to get rid off.

there, i fixed that for ya you otaku poser
Pfft, troll harder bro.
The manga is crap and the anime looks like shit. Why do people even bother watching this rubbish? You people are worse than moetards.
The people who are saying moetard are Shota lovers…
The people who are saying moetard probably fap to Hanna Barbara, Simpsons and Disney pr0n.
I don’t think I could fap to anything Hanna-Barbera or Simpsons-like, but the Disney Princesses are fairly attractive… Not that I’ve tried fapping to them, mind.
He SanCom, quit making news about this bullshit anime already!
No, they’re called that because it’s synonymous with being shallow. Which is exactly what you are if you can’t watch this because it’s ugly-looking, even though you know it deserves to be in the top 3.
I don’t think it really has much to be with being a “moetard”.
I don’t know what you define as moe, or even what most people do, but I wouldn’t call there original designs “moe” I would say she look really attractive, Beautiful even, to me moe is more “cute” (again thats just how I would define it).
Also, Again to me personally, a good Anime is made up of
1) A good story
2) Good Art, Animation
3) Well written or interesting characters
The story is top notch and the characters are written wonderfully!
But then we have our art, This is what you look at, This is what you see throughout that entire 23 minuet episode, That entire 12 episode series. If you find that un-applying its very hard to “lose yourself” in the anime.
This is a very odd mix of Animation and Live Action and a mix they knew may not be well received by many, If you don’t fit into the category that favours it its a shame since past the poor “animation” (and it is) there is a truly magnificent story there but if you can’t get into it and completely understandable and doesn’t make you a “moetard”.
Most people don’t realize in the history of Manga and Anime you can look up Leiji Matsumoto,Shotaro Ishinomori,Chiba Tetsuya.
Get a copy of there Manga and animes judge for yourself and tell me how bad there art is and possible tell me how good or bad the stories are?
The characters are repulsive weirdos that have nothing in common with reality.
All I was saying is that some stories aren’t the kind you can get engrossed in that way. I can understand wanting to, yes, but not everything has to be that way.
Yes, I believe this is meant to be freakish and ugly, just like the characters and story thus far. I don’t feel you’re supposed to “get to like them” but rather want to watch it for the trainwreck effect.
That’s just my opinion, but then if I dropped every anime that didn’t live up to it’s potential right away, I wouldn’t watch more than 2 anime a year, at most.
@05:50
I didn’t say I want to escape to it, I said to lose yourself in it.
Espace would mean running from life problems while losing yourself in it would mean so feel as though you’re there.
I’m not an author but I’ve always felt the best way to tell a story is to make yourself believe the characters, there situations relate to them ect I believe authors like this try to make people relate to there story they want you to watch it and feel for everyone thats I mean by losing yoursef in it. Not running away from your own problems.
I do think you make a good point and its a shame we disagree however I don’t think I can follow your line of thought nor do I feel you can follow mine.
@06:07
That was not my main point however it was a point I made, The Director stated in an interview this was the approach they wanted. I’m not to sure why you would bring that up though.
So your argument is that it was made to be ugly on purpose?
You’re not supposed to “lose yourself” in every anime out there. Some of them are uncomfortable, brutal, or otherwise challenging to watch. Losing yourself in them would defeat the point.
I think Aku no Hana is doing exactly what it set out to do. People are stretching for any angle they can to say it’s too ugly to watch, without realizing that’s precisely the point.
It’s not just the art that’s ugly. It’s an ugly story about the ugliness of youth. The art style gives you no escape from that. That’s what you’re so upset about.
oh ok, so according to your logic the animation has no bearing to the overall quality of the anime at all…
>> the beautiful anime of today will be ugly in 5-10 years anyway
Anime as we know it (sold to otaku for high prices) started around 1983/84. Urusei Yatsura looked awesome at that point.
http://i.imgur.com/iCt2SlI.jpg
Think about how it looked in 1981:
http://i.imgur.com/KMb6j1C.jpg
Yes, that kind of improvement kind of happened.
Think the 1990s looked ugly? Think again and this time pick a show that was, y’know, intended for otaku. Like Aika.
http://i.imgur.com/rsRp3wR.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/aR6YtqE.jpg
See, that was 30 and 20 years ago. Looks still goddamn good if you ask me.
A person is shallow when they like something simply based on the way it looks on the outside, not necessarily if it’s ugly or beautiful in your own or anyone else’s perspective. So technically, all of you here are “shallow” for either hating or liking this anime for the way it looks.
The “shallow” card has, is, and will always be BULLSHIT. Because we are all guilty of being “shallow” in some way. Even that movie called “Shallow Hal” is ironically the epitome of the word.
That’s like saying you’re shallow for not wanting to screw a GIRL because she happens to be a BOY.
Maybe you should watch that 2d Zelda game ending and say it was awesome.
Yeah man just keep going with that circular logic, everyone that does not enjoy this for the art is shallow sure.
To all you downvoting maroons: the beautiful anime of today will be ugly in 5-10 years anyway. Ever go play an old classic video game or anime? They’re not pretty anymore. But only age will help you realize that, and you have the choice of whether to grow up.
My statement was that if animation quality is the only reason you hate something, and you’d otherwise love it, then you’re being shallow.
Clearly you guys don’t like being called shallow for being shallow. Makes sense. Which is probably why you not only misunderstood the point, but twisted it into something else entirely. Kudos.
No. When you can watch shitty low quality badly animated, badly drawn anime as long as its moe or clean and pretty looking.
SO shallow you simpletons are.
damn nice scene
too bad the art style hurts my eyes
would have loved it in the original art style
“The rotoscoping worked really well for the reverse rape scene. Really fresh…”
Well duh, that is THE kind of scene you use rotoscoping for. Basic animation direction 101. Has been done to great effect in countless traditionally manga-styled anime.
Just checked it out earlier…
Is it just me or did they do it on purpose? Because other rotoscopped works like King of the Hills show on TV here every week, and they’re not remotely this ugly.
They did not rotoscope a normal person. Those facial features are classic positive diagnosis for Down Syndrome.
because baudeliere will get bored with something that doesnt annoy everyonw..
I bet you’re one of those manchildren who scream at cosplayers because their eyes aren’t as buggedly big as the source material.
the director and mangake gave you the middle finger
straight up our asses.
My god, they look ugly as fuck. What the hell.
Grr Ok I was used to the rotoscope but now I feel a bit ripped off for this
Then again doubt they could get away with airing it if not for that rotoscoping
You get used to the design. I was able to fap to the red haired gal after adapting to her appearance.
Future Earth Ambassador to the galaxy.
If you take away the brown hair they look japanese.
man, i am FUCKING loving this, three episodes in. Story is disturbing and the soundtrack – especially the end credits ghost/robot thing – is mindblowing. My favourite thing about it, is that it’s causing entitled moetard otaku, across the land, to piss their panties in rage because “BAWWWWWW, it doesm’t look how WE expect it to look! Bawwwwww wahhh wahhhh !”. I mean, god forbid the makers follow their own vision. They should be creating something that fits absolutely within the paper thin vision of whining fucktards on internet message boards 😀 Thank GOD the internet is here, otherwise a billion neckbeaded, basement dwelling pseudo-intellectual artists, with “worthwhile” ideas might NEVER get to tell every other person in the world whats good and what isn’t 🙂 Moe has it’s rightful place. But so do every other kind of animation style. They’re not spending your money on making it so please give it up. You wouldn’t even pay money for it, even if you loved it, you’d only torrent the fucking thing anyway 🙂
I find it fascinating that your favorite thing about this is that other people don’t like it. If the majority starts liking it will you start hating on it?
My god, moetards as usual. What the hell.
My god, trolltards as usual. What the hell.
Ugly people fuck and rape too, you know.
Doesn’t mean you want to watch it.
Doesn’t mean you have to watch it, either. Or complain about it endlessly.
yea, moe is butt ugly too and this shit is loved
I really wanted to watch this show but I just can’t get past the fact that the entire thing looks like someone filmed a bunch of realdolls acting out the parts.
Rotoscoping like this just makes the characters seem less human rather than more.
I’d imagine that any kind of rotoscoping that only penned in partial detail of the human face would look creepy as fuck.
I’d like to agree with you, but frankly I think the stuff that passes as “beautiful” around here looks more like Realdolls.
At least they took some of the criticism to heart. The rotoscoping looked better this time.
Emotional scarro… disgusting T_T
Speaking of which… if Japanese irl are as ugly as this, that would explain the high suicide rate.
I’ve seen other rotosoped material, it’s not like this. It’s like looking at an institute full of Down Syndrome patients.
The manga is way better trust me just read it!!!
It’s not better so far, it just has prettier pictures.
Which is a great bonus.
Wait for Blu-ray..?
They can do this shit all they want but why do they have to ruin original work with this shit? Would this otherwise never made it to anime is that it??
Pretty much agreed with that – any story(short novel or something) could be done with this style but why they ruin the image of original manga?
But the animation is stil f$#@$#ing awesome!
>animation
>Aku no Hana
Ahahaha! No.
It’s not animation, it’s a live action with photoshop filters.
Just like fuckinh moe ruined anime
They didn’t ruin it. It’s still there. They didn’t kill your baby. Get over it.
I’m trying, but I can’t get into it. Would’ve been a great anime otherwise.
Obviously you ain’t trying hard enough.
Agreed, if this had been done from a manga/source material that somewhat rezembeled it. This series would have been most liekly well recieved. However, it’s based on something that noware near resembles it. Thus gaining an instant hate/ strong dislike as a result.
Wait for Aku no Hana: Brotherhood.
I could put up with the style if Nakamura was at least attractive. Being both ugly and creepy just makes her a completely unappealing character.
11:51 21/04/2013 # !
Yes for shitty moetards like you, fucking moron
Yeah, I’m getting past the looks. Have the strangest boner from the .gif.
Judging by the screens of the first episode, I agree with you. This episode however makes her look slightly less down syndromey, so I’ll give it a shot.
She’s one of the most unappealing characters ever invented. I was waiting the whole manga for her to be tortured to death or something, but the creator was too much of a pussy to do something like that
She’s not meant to be appealing.
Not well recieved? It in top five chart!
Is it the sales chart?
Well, obviously moetards are oblivious to that fact.
Sure you cant, get the fuck out moetard.
i just cant help but look at her like shes a guy =/
Even the guy looks better than her…wtf
hahaha.. so true.
the protagonist is the only one that look decent, the “mental girl” look like a dude, while the heroine that suppose to be a beautiful, is not that good looking..
So? Do you need to beat off to every anime you watch?
That’s no girl, that’s a MAN BABY, yeah!
Also, that’s no moon, that’s a BATTLE STATION!
Or a talent coin
Hey look its a retard, no, a moetard
When butch woman wants sex, she’s going to get it and there’s nothing you can do to stop her.
All im gonna say is if my clothes comes off “someone” is getting rammed.
Its like rape by monster arrrrghhh
True rapists are monsters, so that checks out.
I feel like crying… This could have been so epic! Damn rotoscope! T-T
More like rotoscope of Down Syndrome patients. If you’ve seen other rotoscoped material, you’ll realize that this one is far uglier than the average person.
am i the only one that realizes that half the reason why this show is so awesome is because of the rotoscoping?
For the moetard yes.
Go ahead and cry. I’ll be over here enjoying this along with the other anime airing, because I’m not a child who whines about things not always being easy to watch.
Oh wow. I avoided this anime since I saw the screenshots for the last two episodes, but I just caved in and watched the first episode… and I’m already hooked. It’s fuckin’ fantastic. Love everything about it. The rotoscoping obviously isn’t always perfect, but it fits the story extremely well IMO, better than any other art style I can think of. Can’t wait to watch the next two episodes and love every second.
I dig the art and the rotoscoping. I have been craving something more realistic and serious for quite some time now. Aku no hana is entertaining me thoroughly because it delivers.
Huh? There’s plenty of realistic and serious stuff out there.
Like what? Anything as of recent? The last anime I watched and would categorize as “fairly down to earth” would be Jormungand. Maybe I’m just out of the loop and lack information, but it feels like everything as of late has been Kyoani stuff, Chubingbongyuus and railguns.
The butcher girl character design in anime looks hideous and it fits perfectly with the character. So why not ?
Because kids can’t into things that look ugly.
The traditional-2D purists are on full offense.
“DIFFERENT?! THAT’S BLASPHEMY; BRING THE PITCHFORKS!!!”
Personally, I don’t care that it doesn’t look like other anime. The real problem is this just looks like lazy tracing of live footage. As an animator and artist, I can’t respect that.
Sadly, uneducated opinionated ignoramuses seem to think lazy tracing is fresh, amazing and has never been done before, and they immediately dismiss and attack anyone who points out otherwise.
It makes me wonder why I even try to improve my art when it seems like most people are utterly incapable of differentiating between lazy tracing and actual artistic ability.
I could seriously poop on a piece of paper and those people would worship it as fresh and different. Anyone who doesn’t like poop on a paper is a “moetard”!
Welcome to the art world, heard of Warhol yet? Another artist comes to mind as well van Gogh, in his day people considered his art to be pretty awful as well. My point being that art is often more about ideas than skills and thus also to ideas that other have in their reinterpretation of the original. Better skills will certainly give you far greater expressive power though, so I wouldn’t say it’s a waste. The art is not amazing or anything here, but it is fitting and I believe it makes for a better overall anime than if they had used the style of the manga. With the manga style they would lose much of the tone, I read the manga, it comes across as quite light and airy, was a short read without a lot of substance. It has substance, but the art in the manga does not convey it very well. All that said, I actually stopped watching already because I read the manga and the story doesn’t actually go anywhere interesting (for anyone that has already read their fair share of philosophy that is)…
You know what’s different? Panty & Stocking. That was different, and it was cool. This isn’t different, this is shit.
No, P&S got exactly the same kind of response. “Wah! It’s North American, not anime at all!”
The only real difference is that P&G was a comedy, not a drama. You weren’t experiencing pure ugly for 22 minutes (visually and thematically), so you weren’t challenged in the same way.
Indeed, hideous moetards, fucking disgrae for all anime fans
I think it’s more of a disgrace to wield such a miniscule vocabulary.
Omg enough with the tard word get over it already, you sound just like those wannabe japanese girls
Will all the whiners quit already?!
Making something look like all the other anime of every season for the last decade isn’t always a good thing! I’ll gladly take some fluid realism for a change, even if some characters look a bit odd.
Who the hell is whinny about it????? Only thing i keep finding crying about are anti-mainstream
No one here has said anything bad about the anime beside not agree with it art style ,idk why is it hard to understand that one like it art style
,if you like it good for you!!!! Keep watching but everyone else will give it a pass
@6:15: If you’re being serious, then seek professional help. All I see here are people whining that it doesn’t look pretty, and when people tell them to stop whining, they call THEM whiners.
Sorry for my grammar english is not my first language
“properly made”, you mean drawn like every other goddamn anime for the past 15 years?
No, I think they mean properly made like putting more effort in than lazily tracing live action footage.
Looks an improvement over the generic original art to my eyes!
Can’t understand how anything could be more generic than lazily tracing live footage. But whatever rocks your boat, I guess.
Indeed, but moetard are a bunch for blind retards
Look who talking , you’re more extremely blind then anyone here and have you even read the comment?
Everyone here agree the story is good but the art style just horrible choice
“Everyone?”
I love it. The rotoscoping allows for emotions to have much more nuance, and along with the sound design and VO’s, it’s the best drama I’ve ever watched. I really am not disappointed that it’s such a departure from the manga.
Animated properly? You’ll never see traditional animation that smooth . It’s animated fucking brilliantly.
I suppose it’s brilliant to amateurs who think frame rate is everything. In reality, animation consists of more than being smooth.
And there are plenty of examples of amazing traditional animation. Try broadening your tiny scope before you make ignorant statements.
+1
That is one exceptionally well animated anime. I don’t get what they’re complaining about…
Oh, wait, they’re a bunch of moetards, right.
I also agree. This is by far much better done than the contemporary generic animation style seen.
Much anime seems to be drifting towards a hybrid of western cartoon style, while Aku no Hana is a fresh breeze of realism.
All these comments praising realism remind me of how modern game visuals are increasingly generic and boring because everyone tries to be realistic instead of stylish.
If you want realism maybe you try opening your door and going outside. There’s quite a bit of reality out there. Enjoy to your heart’s content.
And we all know that people like anime because of it’s realism
Yes, yes, a style that sacrifices the majority of character detail, and completely lacks shading, resulting in the characters looking like cardboard cutouts and look completely out of place when compared to the nearly immaculate backgrounds, is a, “fresh breeze of realism”.
I’m sorry but that “breeze” isn’t realism, its the studio farting in your face with their lazy half-assed style.
Rotoscoping can be a good thing when used correctly, but in this case the studio just used it to save money, because you don’t need to hire talented and capable animators when all you need is someone who can trace pictures.
And who the f*ck needs realism when you want to watch anime? Get a jdrama for that sh*t :/
No, but fuck up your own original story, not something the viewers have expectations for because of the manga!
You should as well shut the F up, the anime art style was a horrible mistake and yeah it does give it own unique way but it like saying school days was a masterpiece story
So what you’re saying is that EVERY anime should be unrealistic? What the fuck is wrong with you? One anime does something different and your world’s suddenly falling apart?
“YOur pain sustains me” Go watch your shitty generic moe and shut the fuck up
I hope for all our sakes that you get heart disease and get it soon. I really mean that from the bottom of my fucking heart.
Of course, people who don’t like this ugly style are ‘moetards’. Idiots.
@ 04:38
What kind of logic do you expect from shallow creatures like moetards. Expected.
So apparently, you’re entitled to wish death on people who’re willing to look past the ugliness, but when people call you out on being shallow, they’re wrong? Nice logic.
I Agree, 100%
The motion is so realistic that I think they use real people for motion-capture then redraw them.
They use. Google “rotoscope”, noob.
I think it’s excellent, I can understand not liking the style but does it “ruin” it? That’s just ridiculous.
Maybe it doesn’t ruin it for you, but it lots of people (myself included) can’t get past the thing looking horrible
Then next time someone says they dislike a moe show and think it’s ugly, you guys should just let it slide without downvoting it to oblivion.
Oh, wait, that’s impossible. Most SC readers don’t understand big concepts like hypocrisy and sour grapes.
Yea, we cannot get past your horrible moe either, so buuthurt that none cared for your kind in Aku No hana? Deal with it, go watch you generic moe, you have countless-
maybe otakus can’t appreciate the sex scene because the art style is going to make it look like the RAPE SCENE IT ACTUALLY IS
rape=/=sex, sorry if your moé toons have blinded you
Seems like lots of retards here cant use any other insult or argument other than “you are moetard”
Yeah. Even if you’re an experienced professional animator, if you point out issues with the animation, you’re automatically a moetard.
Well sai sir.
can you man-children just get over it already? i’m sorry if you’re too immature to appreciate something if you can’t jack off to it or if you can’t seem to understand that maybe, just maybe, there are deeper themes to this series other than sex sex sex sex sex.
You jack off of this?
You are so right on, their definitely more anime then stupid fanservice and sexual suggested scenes. Crap like that ruins all the true meaning and story of the actual theme of the anime.
