Here, let me explain it the way it was explained to me. In Japan families take baths together, so early on children are introduced to the oppisite sex. So lets say you're a Japanese guy that is in the grueling stages if puberty, and you have a smoking hot sister that is equally in the grueling stages of "cat in heat." I've always really loved Ako's complex hairstyle. ^^ Though it must be a pain in the ass to get that right every morning...
I once dated a girl with ass-length hair who could do a perfect 3,4, or 5 strand braid behind her back and tie it in about 10-15 seconds. I guess when you do it several times a day for most of your life...
It's not a complex hairstyle. I used to do it every single morning and it took about five minutes. It's just a ponytail and clip.

Thing is, many anime girls have so many elaborate and interesting hairstyles, all of which look good, that it now just depresses me that 90% of all girls in my country either go with just having normal long hair, normal short hair, or a ponytail (and even those are fewer in number...)...So boring!...And NOBODY uses ribbons and stuff like they do in anime, even though it would be awesome and look great if they did. I would love to, except I'm a guy, so that wouldn't be as interesting, and more importantly, my hair is impossible (I hate my own hair). It's incredibly difficult to try and get it to look at all interesting.
