Nice false dichotomy. Arguing against deregulation is not the same thing as arguing for over-regulation. All regulation drives up costs, but without sufficient regulation, you leave room for exploitative business practices.

You think the American public can deal with weak regulations? Then how do you explain the fact that most of their customer markets are de facto monopolies or cartels? How do you explain the low quality food they eat? How do you explain the overflow of illegal immigrants?

If the people are apathetic, then strong regulation is a necessary evil. The economy benefits more from healthy markets than from saving on bureaucratic expenses.
