The 1995 movie was garbage, because they took out all of the elements that made the main character human and interesting, turning her into a brooding killing machine reminiscent of Spawn.

Umm... yes she was?
Major Kusanagi was most certainly human. She did have an entirely cybernetic body, but her brain was still normal. Granted, almost everyone had cyberization done to their brains so they could interface with the world. It is this part that can be hacked or used to read/write data to the actual brain. This is sometimes called the Shell.
In the movie, they start by showing a body being formed from nothing. This is not the major, but just shows a cyborg body being made.
If you follow the original manga for it, you find that near the end, she abandoned her last human part, her brain to merge with an AI and become something else. The new her then had bodies all around the world that she could "upload" herself into. These were all her and only one could exist at the same time. However, she does run into a different variation of herself.

i dont know how movie version handled it, i watched it so long ago and care so little about it... its a good movie, just not one i like
she's a cyborg that's entirely synthetic... part of the film is about her not believing that she has any human part remaining in her and that she questions the memories she has as being entirely fabricated... that's why they purposely made her into a character that rarely shows emotions
and no I don't believe in the soul :P I only use the term as figuratively speaking...
That's actually arguable. If you don't believe in the existence of some kind of soul, she's not actually human, as she doesn't have any human parts, just a machine, constructed to replicate a certain human.
From what I know she doesn't have a normal human brain either, it's either heavily modded or entirely synthetic.
Would a sentient machine that's capable of human thought process and possessed personality, traits, memories etc be human?
Garbage? yeah, probably that is why it is so influential in the cyberpunk aesthetics (The matrix was directly inspired by it).
As a fan of both SAC and the movie adaptations - I will interject. You're wrong the movies were imo superior to SAC (only slightly) they had a better soundtrack although Yoko Kanno's was insane as well the + portrayal was unmitigated by the episodic constraints of a series.
The Major wasn't exactly emotional in SAC either
Wasn't the movie the original work and SAT a derivative? So it's more correct to say they added those "human" elements to appease fans.
What??? The original work was the 1989 manga. SAC is much more like the manga than the two movies.

Have to agree. Looking back on that anime, I didn't understand/like it when I was a kid, grew up and now that I understand it I like it even less.

No one mentions how scryed is on top? Ughh that anime was, not even close to that good.
I'm guessing it's on top because of the theme music, which was pretty damn catchy. Still, the story was way too inconsistent or poorly executed at a lot of points.
It's about a 6/10 overall. It got really stupid once the mainland was involved that the powers started evolving.
What they should've done was force Kazuma to gain some level of personal growth by having to fight smarter, not give him an unstoppable trump card!
