@SpideyPHL: The thing is, while they’re at very different scales, they both find themselves surprised by their results:

NIS: “Why is Neptunia doing so well? Ok – I guess we’ll make some more then!”

S-E: “Oh my god… Why isn’t Final Fantasy selling? What can we do to stay afloat???”

Whether you’re making a game to sell 10 units or 10,000,000, you want to hit, or even exceed your target. When that starts failing, going further in the direction that got you there is not a good idea, especially in an industry where a lot of big studios are completely destroyed by one flop.

Back to their roots… You know, they may be able to spring back if they looked at small RPG niche companies like NIS and took some notes: Lots of cheapish reusable sprites rather than immaculately crafted 3D models. Lots of game mechanics and good writing. They could probably slash development costs so much with that, they could even include a range of different endings. They wouldn’t have to turn it into a funny over the top fanservice fest like NIS loves, but if they could stop being so …

Well, we know what they won’t make: FF7, or a large profit. They should have remade FF7, maybe around 2005. Now, I’m kind of glad they won’t touch it, because I no longer have faith that they could even retrace their steps. It’s a different company now.

Fair point. I got into J-pop in the 90s so I missed Onyanko Club. My main point is that these groups are juggernauts and it’s probably really uneconomical to try to compete with them (unless you already own all the others.)

The fan outrage(?) is probably because it bears no resemblance to PMMM in the first place. It’s just a bunch of girls in gothic lolita fashion with a couple props – Kyuubey and a soul gem. It’s like if a clean-shaven guy in blue jeans, a white t-shirt and a ball cap showed up and went “hey, itsa mee – Mario!” Actually, it’s kind of what we see in most video game movies – no respect for the source material, because the director thinks they can do “better” with their own ideas… which no longer …

Not only is it a ridiculous concept that takes a lot of resources, but the founders may have Yakuza ties, so it seems like an unwise choice – not that they’d come and kill you, but you may not even get a fair chance at taking on the AKB monster. It’s possible Morning Musume/Hello! Project is a kind of competition – but not really rivals, or on the same scale. Probably what inspired AKB48 though, or at least acts like it.

I agree. Great series, but it seems well suited to short stories.

  • Anime: Smoking “Uncool”:
Even back in FLCL, Mamimi was always smoking a cigarette, but when she got close to Naota, he said “you stink like tobacco!” …though it’d also be as easy or easier to find characters like Spike Spiegel or Daisuke Jigen or Lupin III who smoked without effect.
