One of China’s burgeoning legion of otaku has been attracting a great deal of attention for holding a cosplay wedding in which he married not only holographic princess Hatsune Miku but Arthurian damsel Saber as well.
Apparently not satisfied with only Miku, an itasha, and a squad of maids, for good measure he also managed to say his vows with Saber and have her join him in some swordplay at the same event:

Why does everyone assume it is the groom's idea? There are plenty of otaku women in China because it's not shameful being one there(unlike certain other Country).
The only reason for that is okatus in China tend to be well-off, as opposed to the poor NEETs of Japan. Thus, anime gets associated with wealth and success as opposed to failure.

I thought loving anime could be interpreted as pro-Japan in China so being an anime otaku would have to be kept secret in public, or at least only around certain communities.

Big cities are melting pots. No surprise they would be accepting to foreign culture considering how much exposure they've got.
It's more accurate than false, as someone who's traveled to a lot, including china and japan, big cities generally are more metropolitan, and tend to be more accepting of things, but then again in china a small city is 2million people..
