I’m fairly certain that building codes and safety standards as we think of them in the western world are virtually nonexistent in China.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if this stuff isn’t being intentionally built to fail. China is artificially raising its GDP as part of some international dick measuring contest, so it wouldn’t dismiss the possibility that they’re building stuff to fail so that they can boost their GDP further by rebuilding all of it.
