Korea “Accidentally” Catches 2350 Whales in 2012

South Korea is apparently now as enthusiastic about non-whaling as Japan – official statistics for 2012 reveal that an average of 6.4 whales a day “were caught by accident” in Korean coastal waters, with the official tally reaching 2350.
Whereas Japan studiously maintains the pretence of operating a major cetacean research program which just happens to involve killing large numbers of (admittedly generally unendangered) whales and then selling their horrible meat to whomever can be persuaded to buy it, South Korea merely insists the whales were accidentally caught.
Korean authorities have in recent years began to attempt to regulate the domestic trade in whale meat, leading to more detailed statistics on the amount of accidentally caught and sold whales.
South Korean maritime authorities also pledge to crack down on illegal whaling – which presumably does not include whales which just happened to swim into the nets of fishermen by accident.
Meanwhile Korean politicians have already began discussing starting their own full scale “scientific” whaling program in the vein of the Japanese – although whether their researchers will prove as much of a pushover as the Japanese remains to be seen.

"we don't accidentally catch whales"
"but when we do, we catch 2350 whales"
"one does not simply catch 2350 whales accidentally.."
Yes you can, by accident...
And by that I mean accidently arpooning them. It could happen.
It's not "one", it's a bunch of random private fishers who caught the whales against regulations and lied about it. The problem is that whales do sometimes do get caught by accident, and you can't really sanction all of them without proof of intent.
Whales are not fish.
It's in the water, it's fish.

This post is dumb and there's a difference between mammals and simple fish.
one does not simply walk into Mordor either.
Unless you have Gollum.
"Korea Catches Whales" <---- AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!
Gotta catch em all
The irresponsible asians are going to be the reason none of us will be eating fish in 25 years, none of them practice conservation fishing and they use abusive tactics that catch and kill everything in the area instead of just what they are after.
>accidently catch whales
>no fish in the future
did i miss something?
Whales share the same environment as the fish. Whatever kills the whales will probably kill the fish too.
not really, getting rid of whales would actually mean more fish as they compete against fish for the same food source and eat lots more of it with one mouthfull.
sooo...people harpoon fish?
When all the fishes gone extinct we all can have some lovely plankton soup.
You word it as if this isn't the doing of a few small-time criminals who exploit the difficulty of regulating naval industries.
You act as if Westerners weren't just as guilty in the past. I'm well aware that information is better now, and that we generally know better, so I'm not saying their actions should be easily dismissed.
But the fact remains that even after the harmful effects of whaling were known it took Western countries quite some time to phase out the practice, catch criminals responsible, educate the general population, and most importantly develop other areas of the economy to provide jobs and make whaling less lucrative.
With mistakes come knowledge. With knowledge comes wisdom. Those who have gained wisdom from their mistakes are in the perfect place to teach others not to repeat those same mistakes. They have a responsibility to the world to teach others.

Ika Musume will punish you, in the name of the krill.
Nah, she won't care as long as they hunt Orcas(killer whales) and leave the shrimps alone...
But even then, she will still have to deal with Chizuru, who is a bigger threat to Ika than those Orcas.
But Ika Musume hates whales.
OMG, she's gonna destroy South Korea!
No, she is going to invade and conquer it. First Korea, then the world!
And nothing of value was lost.
I accidentally fapped.
Whalers? Wat r u doin? Whalers? STAHP!
Ah, new target for Sea Shepherds and the Animal Planet.
Geez, so much bullshit!
1. Deploy some more coast guard ships and do some routine checking
2. Create a new law, which would punish by death anyone caught with a whale aboard.
3. profit
Korea accidentally catches whales.
Everything in China accidentally explodes.
India accidentally rapes too many women.
Sankakucomplex still is shallow.
The world still turns
Yes, and America accidentally shoots people and Europe gets into debt by accident, they aren't the only ones.
So the South Koreans caught 2350 fat girls accidentally?
I'd show pictures of big fish instead too.
"South Korean maritime authorities also pledge to crack down on illegal whaling..."
Yeah right. And I suppose there are flying purple hippos who spew out cotton candy from their mouths.
there is no doubt that on that side of the planet there is a total lack of respect for animal life, and much less for preserving the species and the planet.
and koreans are joining the anti-whaling nations to bash Japan for whaling. really dispicable.
The least they could do is swap to eating utterly useless animals like pandas. Whales and sharks manage to contribute to their ecosystems while pandas just sit there.
But really, the killing, selling and eating of animals like whales, sharks and dolphins should be considered alright as long as it's sustainable. People should be able to eat as much animal meat as they want as long as common sense or even laws regarding animal populations are put into practice, like how it's done with hunting wild game such as deer.
On the economics side, is there enough actual demand for whale meat to warrant the supply being brought in?
If we're going to go with what creature should eaten based on what impact they have on their ecosystem, I think you'd be on the menu before a panda.
he wouldnt actually
Why don't they come hunt the whales in Mexico and the Whales and waterbuffalos in South Texas? There are hundreds of thousands of 600 lb'ers here.
Hahaha xD
Going to another country and killing their fat people would probably be considered an act of war.
Fuck whales. What about the Ganymede sea rat?
You got a point there.
We gotta protect it
