Japanese are yet again aghast at the results of surveys demonstrating marriage in Japan is rather less monogamous than might be suspected.
A survey of 500 Japanese housewives found 14.8% freely admitted they they had sex with someone other than their husband whilst married.
Quizzed as to how many partners they had, most admitted to having had many – 60.8% had “2-5,” followed by 36.5% with “1″ and 2.7% with “6-10.”
A marriage writer familiar with such matters comments that “2-5 is the most common number we see here, so it would seem once you’ve done it once the hurdle to taking further partners really lowers. Also, a lot of people refer to this as ‘extra-marital romance’ rather than ‘adultery,’ lessening the sense of guilt.”
Such extramarital trysts were generally long lasting – 48.6% reporting their longest affair lasted over 3 years, whilst 20.3% had ones lasting 1-6 months, 13.5% 1-3 years, 6.8% 6-12 months and only 10.8% under a month.
The writer remarks that “such affairs tend to last a long time as a way of preventing the family from collapsing. And with cell phones, adultery is easier than ever.”
The survey also found no correlation between adulterous liaisons and the absence of sex in the marriage itself – so called “sexless” marriages being extremely common in Japan, a nation which generally comes in quite low in national comparisons of actual sexual activity.
Japan’s menfolk are in no position to criticise, however – according to a similar survey published by the Monthly Charger, only 44.8% of men reported they had “never” cheated on their wives – whilst 20.4% had ‘only’ had sex with prostitutes, another 20.4% only having cheated, and the remaining 14.4% having enjoyed both prostitution and infidelity.

Marriage is a legal contract. IMO it isn't done to prove your love (or shouldn't be the reason). But if you really love someone & want to spend the rest of your life with someone, it should be considered at the very least for financial planning reasons.
You have a point, but think through this more....marriage is a way to keep families together. Sure you don't need some piece of paper to proclaim your love, but Marriage is a binding vow. Swearing to a life long commitment with your partner. It's a reminder of that vow. Any two couples can be in love. But words only go so far. Each partner will later on probably want insurance that they love them and only them. And like all human beings, its a psychological thing. There will always be uneasiness and worry. Also when a couple has kids its, there is moral obligation for you and your spouse to do what's best for the kids. Without marriage I think it makes it easier for someone to cheat on their spouse and later come up with excuses for their cheating. Marriage is a reminder of the life long commitment towards family. Having a family and taking care of them is a lot of stress and even the best of people will maybe for a second or two think to run away from their family. I don't mind free love, but the idea of riding a life long commitment towards your partner on just words alone doesn't say much in today's society. Marriage is also reassurance to yourself that you are ready for that life long relationship. The people who can have life long relationship with one partner and not need to use the setup of marriage are really unique. Most people aren't that strong and need that symbol.

The institution isn't even needed for a couple to love each other while the feelings lasts, people marry as if this will make one love each other forever and everything will be okay because they are now chained by the law, but no one is prepared to live the illusion to protect the family created after the romance ends.
Of course, some couples are lucky enough to make this work, but many are just marrying because society tells them to do so.
