As of yet I didn't watch a single monogatari episode, and I never had a clue what it is about.
I still don't.
Bakemonogatari was probably one of the best animes in the last decade. A fresh approach to the visuals, characters, the story and even the fanservice. Nisemonogatari by contrast was stale and conventional. It looks like Neko is carrying on with that trend.

Bakemonogatari was one of the best animes I've seen in a long time and it was definitely the best of the series.
Bake's visuals, characters, story and animation were top notch and it had just enough fanservice to make it interesting, but not vulgar. The impression I got was that it was definitely more about the story than the panties.
Nise felt like just the opposite. Too much fanservice, not enough story. I've only watched the first ep of Neko, so far, and I get the same impression I got from Nise, more fanservice than story.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy fanservice as much as the next guy and I have little problem with fanservice based anime. But, when the original is one thing and the sequels become another, well, it just feels like they're selling out to me.

The fanservice isnt really shaft selling out. It is part of the books and shaft is doing an excellent job adapting them. Nise wasnt as good as bake certainly but it still had lotso enjoyable parts, fanservice aside.
Anyway, watch the rest of neko. The fanservice is heavy in the first bit but it gets toned down for the rest of it.
How can they sell out when both bake and nise is original, and Shaft are just following the novel. *sigh*
