In the prologue, it said that anyone harboring false illusions about their "magical heroes" as nothing more than tools is setting up for death and defeat.
The despair that the characters are shown serve to show the harshness of reality and failed dreams, something Urobuchi is competent at writing, in Fate/Zero and Madoka Magica, and to a lesser extent Psycho Pass.
