Thank you, Anon. The key word here is “deterrence”. Countries these days don’t want nukes so they can destroy others. They want so they can -threaten- to destroy others. So they can tell their enemies that they -also- have nukes.
People online are always going on about solving “Problem X” with a Big Boy to the face. The reason no one can do this is because, the moment a country uses a nuclear weapon on another, allies of the second country can turn and do it right back at them. And then everyone is flinging nukes.
