Wood can most definitely explode. It’s a problem one normally encounters with large weaponry like balistas, trebuchets, and battering rams. Apply enough force from the right directions and it will explode accelerating splinters fast enough to cut into bone. The amount of force required is proportional to the size and shape, I imagine it really doesn’t take much force at all for something like a chair leg.
