Errm in a way yes. The kanji that has been used to Ninja has been changed a few times during history. The modern word uses the kanji 忍 which means NIN, to endure, or SHINOBU, to conceal. Ninja is written as 忍者 which means “someone who endures” or “someone who conceals himself”. Shinobi is merely the same thing but read differently. Kunoichi are female ninja, yes. It’s believes it’s a play on the kanji for woman, 女, since kunoichi is written くノ一. Ninja/Shinobi doesn’t literally mean male, it’s just that since there is a term for the female ones people just assume it’s male. Hope that solved it for you.
