if they couldn’t help their own son, how could they have helped a larger man?

you don’t “help” a drowning person by getting in with them, you toss them a flotation device. barring that, you tie some quick knots in a rope and toss that to him. or just use a rope with a loop in it, and have the drowning person wrap it around them.

now, the people were bad for leaving and not caring, but if they were too stupid to help their own son, i’m not sure they would have been much more help to this guy.

  Usually it takes a few hours to go from a story that shows a truly selfless act that makes one have hope in humanity, to one that makes me think the person in the first story selflessness is wasted on this batch of humanity.
