Sword Art Online Tells It Like It Is…

MMORPG anime Sword Art Online’s brutal honesty in depicting the gender and looks of the players behind their virtual avatars has turned more than a few heads, as has the realisation that it is really an anime about creepy otaku pretending to be cute girls online…
The actual anime is being reasonably well received in spite of the fact that almost all the cute girls are actually men (it remains to be seen whether it takes things a step further and has a few episodes devoted to camping rare mobs for hours only to have them stolen by Chinese gold farmers or worse still killing rats for days only to lose everything in a server rollback):

Got nothing to do with "pretending" to be cute girls. If you're going to stare at a screen for hours a day, you prefer to look at a cute girl then the backside of a guy
Except in Sword Art Online, you're immersed in a 1st-person virtual reality, so it's not about staring at your backside more than it is staring at your own chest. And feeling it. And etc.
There was just a few people who turned out to be guys and that totally does not make the full consistency of the plot.
Plus, there will be a genuine female in ep 2.
And yeah, this is the first anime to REALLY show what's MMO world really like
There's already genuine girls in episode 1, they're just standing amidst a bunch of guys.
More intriguing is how I did not see any girls playing as male characters, which is actually a rather common thing also, while not as big as guys playing female characters.
I leiks lolis! Sue me =_=
.hack//Sign had a girl as a guy, so not really
I have no problems being a chick in a video game, as long as i can kick ass.
.hack did it first?
If you have gender identity problems, it's more about playing with hair and feeling normal for once...
For yeah, I can see it being... ooh I has boobs *grope*
There's nothing stopping a dude from growing out his hair in this day and age, nor from a chick cutting hers.
True enough, but there's more than long hair... if you feel like a girl, but are a guy; you'd do nothing more than all you could to escape into that indentity.
This Anime is a depiction of what could be, only to have the main developer gone crazy >.>
Nah, the vast majority of girls in the game have slowly been killed off or seem to camp out in towns (side characters anyone?). I had kirito's back when he told that lolicon to suck it, bitch you are a blacksmith npc; congrats, but I ain't letting a npc touch my goods.
My hands are quiet small and smooth.
May I fondle that masculine male backside?
+0+
It's so tasty to look at! Ooooh'
If you're going to stare at a screen for hours a day, you prefer to look at a cute girl then the backside of a guy
This.
Let's stare at each-other! <3
QFT
which one is it?
quote for truth or quit fucking troll?
Oh, you're not talking about Quantum Field Theory then?
Never heard of the second , you see it often ?
difference between seeing your character as an extension of yourself or simply a character you're using to play.
i don't know if this applies, but i'm replaying demon's souls and this time around i'm playing a girl character. i got to lvl 400+ with the guy and i am in multiple NG+'s (lost count), but one thing that really gets me, is the "female only" armor. so i'm going to beat it once more to check out all the armor options.
on another note, when i play games, i don't so much act the role out like it was me, but more less what i think the character would do, and what will get me special items. i don't have a problem playing as a female character as long as the story and gameplay isn't shallow. kinda like watching a movie, where the protagonist is a female.
We all dream to be that "little girl"
Well at least I do.
I was until I grew up. But I still am at heart!
+___+
i agree with anon #1. Just like here, we are all pixels. there is no "sex". Get real. Also the post is late that ep aired almost a week ago. Im not going to go into the .hack cross references...
I can certify that this is indeed the truth.
G.I.R.L players in MMO games always made me feel uncomfortable. I play guy characters all the time in MMOs because I like trying to implement myself into the game by customizing it to the point that it reflects my personality. I've had no problem with looking at the backside of my characters.
Definitely found it hilarious when all the G.I.R.L players got "exposed".
And I play what is as far as possible from myself in mmorpgs. IRL I'm 6'4" male, In games I usually play whatever race is the shortest and quite often female.
I play games as a break from reality, and not to get my rocks off or try to scam anyone. There is porn and ebay for those actions.
Almost never a good idea. Making characters like yourself gives them all your little hangups. If you think your smart, they're a squishy mage. If you think your strong or tough, dumb swordsman. Then you feel insulted that this representation of you is so messed up from balancing and class systems.
I started using girl characters when I noticed it was easier to make GOOD characters when I didn't try to make them like me and just let them do what works.
My squishy mage DOMINATED in Ragnarok Online, because I *am* smart. Most fun I've ever had, destroying unsuspecting people who said "ah, squishy mage!" And then "oh my God, he's not quite as squishy as I thought!"
Your squishy mage probably had a hell of a leveling curve and required lot's of grinding.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LinearWarriorsQuadraticWizards
Not to mention the required Tank for defense. I love Spell BTW but usually play stuff that can solo well.
The only way to know for sure that it is a girl is to ask them to speak in a mic. 95% of the time you'll know XD.
I don't mind playing either gender in an MMO, but I never claim to be an irl chick if asked.
That said, I don't give a damn of what gender the other people in the game are, as long as they don't do anything immersion braking in a RP environment. I'm looking at you dancing naked elves standing on top of the mailbox.
@19:00
Some voice changing software is all they need. The low quality VoIP in your typical MMOs is soundly defeated by this technique.
Yeah, G.I.R.L players unsettle me more than male LARPers that like to imagine they are big burly barbarians... Oh wait.
But yeah, real men like you prefer watching the tight and ripped abs of some steamy muscle builders. Nothing gets dem juices flowin' like the sight of muscle flexing.
after playing a male castanic during TERA beta I (literally) couldn't think straight for a full week
I know only House wives who play MMO games.
Agreed, I choose a female avatar more than half the time, whatever that just looks better.
Yeah, this. I rather look at the back side (or whatever side) of a cute/sexy avatar than a male one if I can help it.
But this is why I laugh at MMORPG's that introduce stuff like Wedding Systems and costumes. Hurray for SOA's mirrors lol
Nope. Armor looks fail on fem chars. (former wow player here) I'd much rather have an fat Orc with AWSM Gear than som fail elf with.. half assed gear.
Well WoW isnt exactly best example for it. As Characters there generally dont look very sexy.
My god, how much of an insecure faggot can you be?
then when another guy hits on you, you take advantage of them by asking for items, you eventually turn up your inner female and act more sexy, to get rare items you start doing cyber sex, and since you're a guy, having cyber sex with another guy for rare items, that makes you gay AND a prostitute.
I RPd female once in GW. I got my guild leader to hand me gifts for being a 'good' player and inspiring. I never did anything more than act cute and girly though, no cyber or anything. It was fun as hell and would do it again. Not gay, but a prostitute maybe.
Of course it is you sexually unsecure fag-wannabes.
Is this the new .hack//something?
Digital game world with music also done by Yuki Kajiura, that's not too far off.
not only that, but both series were about people who were trapped within the game. Tsubasa Chronicle also featured a virtual world in a somewhat lengthy story arc... huh... is it all a coincidence? If not, then I have an eventual adaption of RealPG to look forward to. ^^
not only that, but both series were about people who were trapped within the game. Tsubasa Chronicle also featured a virtual world in a somewhat lengthy story arc... huh... is it all a coincidence? Or can I expect to hear her in an eventual adaption of RealPG. ^^
Btw, the novel have written that the protagonist went to other games. So, I'm 50-50 it's kinda like .hack//
This show feels like .Hack// series with The Matrix living rules, which are :
Death in Virtual World == Death in Reality World; you can be a superhuman in this virtual world although you don't know about fighting; and you can't force disconnect or you're dead.
But actually, SAO is written in the same time of .Hack//Sign, so it is not influenced by .Hack//
The author said that this story is influenced by Ragnarok Online & Ultima Online.
Also, the story isn't focusing at the game's world. Later, the story will take place in the reality world with some scene about pseudo-incest romance, triangle love, greedy richman, AIDS issue, and so on.
I suggest you all to read the translated light novel in baka-tsuki before judge the story by reading some troller comments in sancom.
lol, inspired by RO? That's funny, because when I saw the town up there, I was like "Prontera!? =D "
The character designs also remind me of RO.
Which is awesome. The only MMO I've ever enjoyed.
RO was awesome, untill everyone got emo, guilds became family, then guild jumpers kept stealing items, people kept getting backstabbed, it was like some mafia movie. Things have settled down since it became f2p, more people.
Guilds became family and in some servers you could marry and *adopt children*
That was lulzy awesome.
that would suck lol cause I lag out a lot, lmao, then a server outage d/cs everyone, killing hundreds in one go.
But PK was an everyday kind of thing in .hack//SIGN. So death in VR --> respawn.
So in other words, the story wants to tug at our heartstrings with melodrama to hook us, like Deadman Wonderland?
That's for .hack//
In this story, players can't recklessly to be killed because it cost the life.
Except that if you get PKed in Aincrad, you die
lol spoiler comment ^
You can say that. it's similar in a way, but with more moe ;D
.hack and the light novel for this anime is written on the same year
Really? It says 2009 in the author's notes. .hack started in 2002.
Development for .hack began in early 2000.. so i'd say .hack came first
it was written as a webnovel in 2002, an published as an actual book in 2009 after the author won a competition and got a contract.
also in the novels, it stated thta you actually couldnt change your gender in SAO... ut i guss sicne the info only came up in the sex-scene and sint too important otherwise (its just a little exposition explainign why their avatars have penis and vagina) and they wotn directly include that in the anime anyways, they didnt pay too much heed to that.
Yep. The SAO web novel was written in '02, but the first light novel was published back in '09. It's hard to say which came first.
Actually it does. Not saying there arent guys out there that prefer to stare at a female as a guy player, but also pretending to be a girl to "seduce" a guy, especially for priority on drops, mission/quest assistance, etc, not to mention just flat out asking for in game currency.
Dont forget THOSE players XD
Also the bit about farmers and rat campers... Yeah since the game is "play tough or die" and unless theres a way to "buy gold" while still connected to said game is possible since logging off to go to a gold farmers website to buy it is impossible, then there wont be any of that going on here. The 3 hour long rat killing session? Possible if respawn timesarent total crap and/or mobs respawn at all considering the mc's comment on "places being picked clean"
Old school FFXI player here, so i speak from that bubble in case you're wondering XD
Yea, I was about to say, either Hack, Digimon, or something else with a "living in a digital world" premise
But this guy will never be as badass as Haseo. Probably a close 2nd though.
oh he beats Haseo by lengths
especially near the end of volume 1 and during the whole Phantom Bullet Arc he is just plain beast
Past beast. More like perpetual hax.
Well, he does have the nickname of Beater, a combination of the terms: Beta Tester and Cheater. :P
I think the sex scene this character gets in the novel makes him better than Haseo... in some ways.
No, this is probably good unlike hack
clearly some troll who wants to start shit and probably hasnt even watched it. Dot hack wasnt perfect but its still better than this garbage.
ROFL! "BWAHAHA! YOU ARE NOW STUCK IN MY DIGITAL WORLD THAT I CREATED BECAUSE YOU PUT AN OBVIOUSLY DANGEROUS DEVICE THAT WAS QUOTED AS SUCH BY THE CREATOR, ON! NOW YOU MUST ALL PLAY TEH VIDEO GAEM AND IF YOU DIE IN GAME YOU IN DIE REEL LOIFE!" Yeah real dark. At least dot hack had subtlety. Look who's calling who a 13 year old.
nothing beats 1/2 but I doubt they will make it into an anime considering it's a manhwa (korean) and it on comes out every couple of months.
the ideas .hack and sao cover are completely different. sao is more about the impact this kind of technology would have on society and individuals.
don't generalize stories so much. Stories with the same basic premise can go in wildly different directions.
Clearly someone who probably hasn't even read the novels. SAO is better than hack, and I'm not trying to say that hack is bad. (Except maybe "twilight".
If you think He is a troll do not feed him, and of course don't estart trolling yourself ¬¬U
@Anon 16:49
I think you mean "Udeden". No need to tarnish the word "twilight" even further, especially since the .hack franchise was probably the best thing it had going for it.
I don't really see the point on comparing hack with SAO. Storywise they are not gonna be the same...it is like people go to the cinema to watch movies, people DON'T care if comedy, romance or action movies have been done to death, as long as it is ENTERTAINING without feeling it is a waste of time.
.hack was for dumb fuck 13 year olds who didn't know better, everyone grew out of it, except for a few it seems. SAO takes on darker routes that actually deals with lives, not some shitty ass 13 year old's wet dream. Fuck you .hack fans, fuck you.
