I was meaning more the rut inspired by mindless pseudo-porn series like To Love-Ru, where there is no plot, just cute girls prancing about mostly naked. CLANNAD is a genre unto itself. Get too close to that one and you'll either turn to gold or burst into flames. Or tears. Either way, really. Probably the latter. DxD was one of the few that fully embraced the eros side of the harem genre while getting a solid plot in there as well. The closest pinnacle to that series type would be Akamatsu-sensei's work (i.e. Love Hina and such, as you mentioned). Those series did well at being character-centric (as opposed to plot-centric) while still not feeling shallow or slow. A lot of the type B's out there, (I'm looking at you, K-ON) fall flat on that aspect, and are more of an excuse to stare at cute girls behaving cutely. That being said, there's a lot of great examples of the harem genre out there, many (if not most) have yet to make it to an animated format. It's one of my favorite genres, as is most of the rom-coms or romance in general, so I respect the people who make it. Heck, I've written three books. all of which were heavy on the romance. Sexual tension, when done right, is far, far more powerful than any explosion or dose in ultraviolence in the effect it has. :D

I'm sorry sir, but i have no clue what kind of harems you've been watching.

Clannad had a better plot than most non-harem anime, same for highschool DxD, Air, Haganai, IS, and the list goes on.

Just because you watched some outdated harem anime focusing on random and stupid jokes doesn't mean all the animes of the said genre are the same. heck, Love hina is outdated and has a very decent plot compared to alot of the recent years anime regardless of genre.
