It's more like The Wire represented with the art style of Hayao Miyazaki.
The story is about institutions and their affect on the relationship between fairies and humans that doubt them. This is very apparent even in the very first episode during the meeting sequence. The main character Watashi talks like a smartass too, not unlike Jimmy McNulty.
If someone who likes The Wire likes this, it must be good. Have to check out.
