  Windows 7 does have a SMART monitoring component built in. I know that for a fact since it warned me once with one of those typical Aero system message boxes when one of my discs indicated an impending failure (it turned out to be a false-positive though, but that’s due to SMART’s inadequacy and not Windows’ fault).
