Quicker version: it's parody of sci-fi, mystery nad horror genres. Haruhi always takes seriously certain genre logic and than stuff happens. Like in "Lone island syndrome", or with her believing that every transfer student is mysterious.

So yeah, Tex_Arcana got it right. Parody is rather subtle (considering nowadays Hollywood overblown standards), so some people won't get it.

To make things even funnier, some people believes that Lovecraft himself parodied horror genre. Well, ther is lot of references in his mitology to his pen-pals and favourite authors, sometimes he makes jabs at them - but it's so subtle and you need so much knowledge to get it that for most of us his inner jokes are completely incomprehensible. It's my literature proffesor who told me about this.
