I usually just walk around with my DSLR, camera bag, and sometimes my tripod and when I see something/someone I want a picture of, I politely ask permission. The worst response I’ve ever heard is “No.” and the best was a complete stranger inviting me to her apartment for a nude photo shoot. (No touching and no sex after though :(

As long as I’m nice and polite and don’t look like a creep, you’d be surprised what people will do/show.
