Shanghai is a dirty, nasty place, the protagonists are either insane (Lynch) or jaded sociopaths (Kane), and the only sympathetic character dies in a horrific manner. Corporations use the local military as their own mercenaries.
The rank and file Chinese citizenry get off light.
