Comment on K-ON! Ended “Because Uni Life Was Too Difficult” by Anonymous:

Alot of manga of late are ending suddenly. Claymore and Negima to name a few and now K-ON. The authors are ending them suddenly because of a new law in the pipeline in Japan called the “Neigbour Copyright Law”.

See currently in Japan, the manga author retains FULL rights over any manga he wrote. If a publisher wants to sue or shut down fan creations, they must get permission from the author but alot of manga authors actually don’t mind fan creation which is why we have alot of doujinshi being sold openly in Japan. The new law would effectively make publishers co-copyright holders and they would be able to sue or shut down fan creations without getting permission from the manga author.

Alot of authors don’t like this because they feel they are losing their ownership rights and so they are ending their works before the new law comes into affect. On a side note, events like Comiket would be effectively destroyed by the new law.
