The phrase “Anime is…” rarely leads an accurate statement. The media format (dear normals: it’s not a genre) encompasses a lot of diversity. So it would be wrong for me to suggest TLR is a shining beacon for anime. It would, however, be well within reason for me to say that TLR is a representative masterpiece for one of the most recognized areas of anime culture: Ecchi. It’s shallow, it’s unrealistic, it’s cliche, and I WOULD NOT CHANGE A DAMN THING ABOUT IT.
