@Anon 22:05 Because using whole blood isn't mentioned on the blood service site at all. It must be a pretty rare occurrence. My point was that even A+ donations are useful because their platelets, which are the part with the shortest shelf-life, can be used for multiple blood types.

blood collected as in whole blood
later will separated it into packed red cells, platelet, plasma, or retain the whole blood, each with its different use
low hb - use packed red cell.
low platelet - use platelet.
ongoing bleeding a lot as in surgery where platelet can't even begin to start clotting - use a lot whole blood, its live saving in critical situation. where got people didn't use it anymore?
