What *does* happen is the anime “feels” weak if the characters do not have well-developed personalities and back-stories.

Harem and moe anime tend to have shallow, standardized character types.

* Big-busted, clumsy girl
* Fragile, sickly girl
* Sidekick guy who is nothing but a slapstick-comedy plot device
* Tsundere girl or guy
* Loyal, enthusiastic girl-next-door/osannanajimi
* Cute twin sisters
