I'd say it's the other way around. Kids today aren't sheltered in the sense of being naive at all. They know all about this stuff. The internet makes it laughably easy even when you don't look for it. So parents realize their kids are getting exposed to things, get all worried and start over-reacting by protesting everything. They end up making a big deal over something entirely pointless since it isn't the cause to begin with.
