Watching puerile movies and reading books which do not enrich is sad. One is free to do it, but there are higher things one should aspire to do. One should uplift oneself not debase oneself.

And yeah, you equivocated too, between celebrating the birthday of a fictional character and reading books which contain depictions of fictional (or semi fictional) events and characters. That's a logical fallacy and makes your argument invalid. These two things are not analogous.

Ignoring that historically Christ rose from the dead and is eternal, there is a major difference between visiting the grave of a loved one and creating a shrine for a typical character made to sell manga, DVDs and merchandise. The former is socially acceptable, normal and well adjusted behaviour (SCIENTIFICALLY) and involves celebrating the life and memory of a real person, and the latter is a delusion. The girl is not real and some guys are laughing all the way to the bank, so thanks for the cash.

Anyway as long as you realise it's only a hobby and it does not take too much time, it's OK. Going overboard like some of the otakus in these pics is too much though and is pathological. Most psychiatrists would not consider that behaviour normal.

It's sad because it's lust for a drawing which causes some limibic system generation of attachment. It's using natural mechanisms unnaturally. Real people actually exist, but they require initiative and work. Relationships with real (adult) women lead to mature self actualisation and families which are the basis of human civilisation. Of course there's also nothing wrong with a bit of fandom here and then, as long as one realises one is doing it just as a hobby and it doesn't replace real relationships and commitments to real people.

When you wish someone "a happy birthday," you do it to make them feel special. Loved. Cared for. Whichever. You do it and they normally respond in kind because they *usually* have some sort of friendship going with you and value your being in some way. Cartoons do *NONE* of this. They sit there. Unassuming. Unfeeling. Incapable in independent or SENTIENT thought. So why, WHY do people continue to wish these "things" a "happy birthday" when the feeling will never be reciprocated? Heyyyy you baked a cake for that character on your lcd screen. TOO BAD SHE CAN'T FRIGGIN' EAT IT DUE TO NOT BEING ALIVE. WTF.
