there's nothing 'naughty' about tattoos. They're a form of expression, not sexuality.

It's amazing how different the posts from 2ch are on this compared to the one on the ban on tattoos.

I think it's a matter of denial on the part of the Japanese, they are secretly in love with them, but have issues with loving them so much.

ya i was thinking the same thing reading the comments here. when it came to the tattoo ban alot were hating on people with tattoos, and now seeing a beautiful woman with them its so different, now its 'hey shes pretty hot, ya id tap it'...i mean really, either you hate tattoos, love tattoos or really don't have an opinion.

I'm Pretty sure I'm correct in the assumption that the average Japanese person hasn't the scarcest clue that in many cultures Tattoos can be seen as a rite of passage. Some cultures use extensive tattooing as a coming of age ceremony.

Here in the US tattoos can have any number of values, from idiot an teen getting a skull on their arm, marks that are made to remind us of a lost one, or personal expression through carefully Designed artwork we keep with us for our lives.

I plan on getting tattoos some day... that is when I can afford it since its pretty darn expensive.

Indeed, they can't bring themselves to say anything bad or even just slightly negative about her; not even 2ch could possibly deny such pure beauty...

But the fact still remains that there are implications. This isn't just any tattoo, it's the traditional kind. This has been bugging me for quite some time now. Is it even possible to find a master of the art that is not closely associated with the Yakuza? I assume that teaching and development of Irezumi art is in line with typical traditional Asian systems, meaning different schools/styles, master-student relationships etc.
In the cultural climate of Japan it seems impossible for practice of this art to ever spread out of Yakuza circles, meaning that in order to get this Irezumi she must have had ties to a Yakuza family, and quite involving ones at that in order to come out of it like this - no other explanation conceivable? And what kind of relationship would that have to be?

Some elaboration would be very appreciated.

Ya know, it's really easy to just gawk and ridicule the Japanese cultural aversion to tattoos, and by extension the 2channelers less than enthusiastic response to this girl. But that's because the alternative is hard.

Take a good look at this girl. It's not that it's just tattoos, she has a nearly full body Irezumi. Even today, the only people who have the traditional Japanese tattoos and that much of them are Yakuza. Either active Yakuza, those affiliated with them or those who were once a part of them. If I was Japanese I'd probably find her appearance quite striking to say the least. The 2channeler comments note the percieved dodginess of them. Others are more to the affect of "what the hell was this girl's past?"

Considering that for centuries this was a nation where only criminals and gangsters got massive tattoos and where prisoners were tattooed as a mark of their criminality (in the form of rings around the ankles and wrists, as can be seen on Mugen in Samurai Champloo) it's no surprise that the Cultural mentality is not friendly to them. Hell, even the traditional style of Irezumi is designed to be hidden under clothing and not to be shown to the public.

Sure, the Western-Style tattoo (as in the kind that originated with American and European Sailors/Naval men cribbing off of Polynesian tribes-people) and the mentality of simply being personal expression or decoration has made it's way to Japan, and the people who get them are usually not criminals or criminally affiliated. But this is a very recent development compared to a centuries ingrained cultural mindset. It will take a long time for the cultural attitude to shift, probably multiple generations.

Though let's be honest, even in America tattoos do not have full acceptance just yet. If you wanted the higher paying, higher status jobs like a Doctor, a Banker or a Lawyer, having a tattoo that couldn't be hidden under scrubs or a business suit would most likely not get you hired. There is still no chance in hell that there would be a Politician in America with an obvious tattoo. To be honest, I think that even if a news organization got wind of a politician having a tattoo that could be hidden under a suit it would be a news scandal (I wouldn't put it past our news media).

And yeah, I do think that people like Osaka's Mayor are idiotic for wanting to put more bans on tattoos, I sometimes wonder just how differently I would see the matter if I was born in Tokyo as opposed to NYC. It's real easy to just outright disagree with this harsh view of tattoos. However, I find it more interesting to think of why they have that mentality.

    US and tattooed politicians.

I guess it would depend on their ethnic background.

Suppose tattoos were part of his Native American background, or say one of the Polynesian protectorates that the US has right now, were to become a State, then you would end up with Politicians with visible tattoos.

There might be some initial hubbub about it, but considering the Supreme Court's ruling on the use of Peyote in Native American ceremonies, it would die down fairly quickly.

So then you'd end up with some Representatives and Senators with visible tattoos. And while some folks will barely know who their Representatives or Senators are, let alone those of other States, it's something that will slowly but surely trickle into public consciousness.

Give it say 100 to 150y or so, and it'll be considered perfectly normal.

The Japanese on the other hand.. That's going to take a while longer for them to come to terms with it, in my estimation. Little too stubborn at times for their own good, don't like change much.

A critic of Hashimoto recently pointed out that George P. Shultz, a former US Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of Labor, and Secretary of State (and an economics professor), has a tattoo of a tiger on his rear.

Evidently it did not harm his career, although he was not particularly open about having it and obviously it was quite easy to conceal...

I think the tattoos look very nice...I notice that the tattoo design splits down the middle, is that part of the traditional design as well?

    Avatar of VillainousHanacha

    08:21 08/03/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

Yes, the split down the middle is part of the traditional design actually. It's a holdover from when Kimono/Wafuku was just everyday clothing for every single person in Japan. Since most forms of Japanese clothing opens from the front and is then tied closed, that bare patch down the middle would match with how Kimono and various other forms of Japanese clothing is put on and worn.

I made another post further down this page explaining why Irezumi is laid out the way it is as a response to another user.

I'll agree that the tattoos are impressive but I have to say that they don't work with any of the lingerie she wears. The tattoos destroy the design of the lingerie.

The best photos are the ones in which she doesn't wear clothes, such as the last photo and the soapy black and white, or the kimono photos.

Thats the most stupid argument. "It will look ugly when you are an old geezer" Well yeah, as if old geezer without tattoos look beautifull ...
