Some of their picks:

There is of course the alternative interpretation of “amazing” production quality, more fully explored in several previous compilations.

I personally feel that it would be kind of cheating to pick movies as they technically have higher budgets and hence higher production values.

But whatever the case, the final fight between the YF-21 and X-9 would be one of my top picks.

Most anime movies have an excellent or decent animation, against a TV series it's a bit unbalanced. Maybe a list of TV series and one of movies would be better?

    19:01 30/01/2012 # ! Neutral (+0.4)

Indeed, if they're not gonna differentiate between movie/OVA/TV then consequentially there shouldn't even be a single TV anime in this list... also, while the movies and OVAs in this sure have amazing animation, there are quite a few movies and OVAs that deserve a spot here even more (all of which I can't possibly list here)... what about Wings of Honneamise? Gunbuster? Eva Rebuild? Redline? etc...

Gunbuster 2 was one hell of a trip, i think it's one of the best animes i have ever seen. and redline is simply the definition of a "cool" animation movie.
not that the rest of the films you mention is any less cool.

for fuck's sake. "with the help of computers" doesn't necessarily mean "made with 3D models", you can draw on a computer with a tablet just how you'd draw in real life. you can literally paint in photoshop with the right brushes.

So only hand drawn pages manually switched to cause movement are the only things that count?

Because computers play a part in quite a few steps during animation.

"So only hand drawn pages manually switched to cause movement are the only things that count?

Because computers play a part in quite a few steps during animation."

Which is why Redline is now officially god-tier status for a topic such as this. 100% hand drawn animation taking roughly 6-7 years to complete.

Go watch it and then go see a fight scene in almost any anime, you'll be asking yourself "WHY IS NOTHING MOVING!!!" XD

It's much easier to move a camera around a scene in a 3D modelling program, than it is to draw changes in perspective over several frames.

I have to disagree - GitS Innocence was much more elaborate and used up lots of CGI to make many tiny details. Much of the secondary scenery had movement that other animu take for granted.

Why isn't 5 Centimeters per Second included?
The cinematography that was animated into that feature animu was beautiful and poignant in the very least. The detail of the littlest things was incredible for the time they had to make it.

Most of the Macross anime's, Akira, FLCL, Evangelion's, Kaleido Star, Gun Buster, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Inuyasha, & of course all the Studio Ghibli stuff are some of what I'd consider great animation. First of all, cheers to recognition of "R. O. D." and "Magic Knight Rayearth", two very under-appreciated titles!

"Precure: Max Heart" had a great opening; and the "Mio-moe" scene from "K-On!" still has me laughing.

I only would add a couple battle scenes to this list:
    (A) from episode "Ballad of Fallen Angels" of "Cowboy Bebop"
    (B) from the Layer battles in the last episode of "Angelic Layer"

AND HOW COME "AKIRA" DIDN'T GET ANY RECOGNITION?!!!!

What the Hell is a Hitman Reborn scene doing there???!!! sorry but i dont think ANY weekly produced series has any place doing in there, truly good animation takes time and LOT of it, especially 2d and if it is hand drawn even longer (nowadays they fake a lot of animation whit cell shaded 3d models and there is vectorial animation, wich is a souped up version of flash animation that is used a LOT today, take a good look at Bakemonogatari and youll spot a lot of it)

Good Animation is really tricky because its not just technical merits but also artistic merits being weighed and those are IMPOSSIBLE to contabilize, there is artsy weird animation as in the madoka magica witches, there is crazy overblown animation as in redline and gurren lagann, there is realistic fluid animation as in Innocence or JinRoh, there is pretty but not entirely realistic animation as in ghibli films that is astounding, matter of fact if were gonna get technical Makoto shinkai movies dont have all that great animation per se, they have incredible backgrounds and art direction but the animation is just average, eva 2.22 THATs great animation, Redline is beyond belief good animation, my vote is for redline.

and actually, most of the witches in Madoka Magica. Though Shaft is one of the few studios that still pushes the envelope in terms of the medium. A lot of shows just use animation to depict a scene, but these guys love playing with composition and postproduction effects.

Love to nominate the 11th episode of Serial Experiments Lain. The overall quality of animation in this series is shoddy, but the intro to this episode is truly a spectacle.
