Actually you do need 3D idols even with 2D ones like Idolm@ster, or at least fans pursue them just as much. Each Idolm@ster girl needs a voice, and that voice most probably is an idol (or becomes one) herself, who by extension of the 2D character becomes famous among the idol otaku and gets the idol treatment.
Not once Vocaloid style synthesis is refined more. Hell, many ota would be happy just with vocaloid voices in their current state.

That's the reason I put 3D in quotation marks. Still, the difference between Idolmaster the game and Idolmaster the anime, for example, is polygonal 3D (albeit cel-shaded) vs. pure 2D art. Enough of a technical difference in my eyes. Of course, considering everything on a screen technically is 2D this can be argued back and forth until the end of time, and by this logic real idols are 2D too, if seen on screen. But, as one of the random Anon guys said here, 2D is pretty much synonymous with manga art in these communities, so, that makes our whole conversation pointless. Yay.
Also, by 2D we mean 'anime characters' or characters drawn/created with the anime drawing style. This should be obvious by now.
As long as it is on a screen, its volume is zero since it only goes in 2 dimensions,as the lenth in the 3rd axis is negligible and near zero therefore it is technically still 2d
