Actually you do need 3D idols even with 2D ones like Idolm@ster, or at least fans pursue them just as much. Each Idolm@ster girl needs a voice, and that voice most probably is an idol (or becomes one) herself, who by extension of the 2D character becomes famous among the idol otaku and gets the idol treatment.
Not once Vocaloid style synthesis is refined more. Hell, many ota would be happy just with vocaloid voices in their current state.
3Dpigs are doomed.
Vocaloid also got voice actors, the voices don't come out of the nowhere.
Nothing is made perfectly from computer alone, it has a person behind everything.
