Suspiciously eager otaku have lately been squinting at the above image in the hopes of discerning what they are assured is apparently a defect in their vision, as paradoxical as this may seem given what they may be missing out on.
(It may be necessary to view the image at full size to gain the intended diagnostic effect)
The image is probably not intended to diagnose or treat any optical deficiency, although scrutinising it too intently could well cause new ones.
Unsurprisingly for a group known for excessive intimacy with their monitors, it seems many otaku can see the image without difficulty.
Anyone looking for more ways to tax their vision may be well advised to examine one of the earlier stereoscopic galleries, and upgrade their browser if required.

I have perfect vision (corrected by Lasik), but if I tilt my laptop's screen w-a-y back, I can see the image in full color.
Cross your eyes abit when looking at it, that kinda helps.

I have -7 L and -10 R and I too can see Hazuki completely on my first gaze. Ironically I can't see her when I took off my glasses...I can't see anything sharp outside of a range of 10 cm, so it was to be expected I guess, hehehe.
Saw it. Barely. It's there though. My eyes are pretty bad...

Just look at your monitor with some distance and you'll see it.
I can just force my eyes to go blur and I can see it right away

It works in how your eyes are focus. If you have glasses on (or really good vision), your eyes focus on the black lines, making everything else blind to your perception. If you take your glasses off (or have blurry vision), everything blends together, making the black lines less important to your vision and allowing you to see the differentiation in color behind the black lines.
The reason you get similar effects when shaking your head or the screen is the same thing. The lines blur together (because they're parallel), but everything else shows up a little easier.
Simple, but effective. =P

Isn't this the other way around though?! People who can't see the image have heightened contrast in their vision and don't see very light shades of gray...
Correct.. This isn't about good or bad eyesight it's about how well your vision detects subtle variations in grayscale and how well your brain canperceive the image in spite of all those tiny diagonals masking the image
I can see her clearly at any angle with or without reading glasses on. However, I remember a similar picture of a sailboat hidden among color dots which had me staring for hours before I can figure it out and I'm not color blind either. It was a matter of fixing your field of focus on the picture; not the dots.

It's a lot easier to see if you look at it from an angle, especially from below.
Was about to say. But yeah it's easier to see when looking from below or distance. Obviously doing the opposite makes it vanish.
These kinds of optical illusions are easy. The ones I have trouble with are the ones that play with your depth perception. Many a times have I walked into wall or stubbed my fingers with those...

You know what works best? Tilt your monitor on it's back. so you are look at it from the bottom.
Tilt your monitor back about 2 - 3 inches, then you can see it :)
And it's in (partial) color.

This optical illusion uses pinhole vision. Make a small hole using your thumb and index finger and peer through it, or try squint your eyes to see the image.
Or, y'know, just go back a few meters.

When I lean back about 4 feet and look up to the ceiling I can see the outline and her hair and where her eyes are but I cannot tell her age or see much more.
When you scroll up and down and when you pull the sides of your eyes kinda like an asian you can easily see it.
